Standardization and Reproducibility Regarding Scanning Procedures and Measurements of Weight-bearing...

Musculoskeletal Diseases

Cone Beam CT (CBCT) of the knee is gaining interest, especially regarding patients suffering from patellofemoral instability. With this study we wish to investigate the day-to-day, test-retest reliability of weight bearing (WB) and non-weight bearing (NWB) CBCT of the knee in healthy participants and patients suffering from trochlear dysplasia. The participants and patients will be scanned in the following positions: 0° WB, 0° NWB, 20° WB, 20° NWB on two separate days. The trochlear dysplasia patients will furthermore be scanned 6 months postoperatively. The aim is to develop af protocol on how to both position patients during weight bearing scannings as well as a protocol on how to prepare the cross sectional images before measurements.

Prevalence of Musculoskeletal Disorders of Upper Limb in Type 1 Diabetes Patients

Type 1 Diabetes

Osteopenia and osteoporosis, particularly related to insulinopenia, are common in type 1 diabetes and increase the risk of fractures. Musculoskeletal disorders of the upper limb are a common complication of type 1 diabetes. However, there is no official recommendation for screening for musculoskeletal disorders in France.

Isolation, Characterization and Evaluation of the Potential of TissuE-resideNt cElls From Waste...

Musculoskeletal Diseases

The general purpose of this study is characterization of tissue-resident cells derived from different musculoskeletal and/or associated connective tissues (such as cartilage, synovial membrane, synovial fluid, bone, adipose tissue and tendons), in order to identify new strategies for the treatment of degenerative and inflammatory musculoskeletal disorders. Cells isolated from different tissue sources will be compared with each other by phenotypic and functional characterization, following culture and treatment with inflammatory elements, drugs and orthobiologics. Moreover, with the aim to assess predictive markers of therapeutic success, a correlation study of the content and properties of the cells isolated from different types of tissue with the clinical profile of the enrolled patients will be conducted.

Therapy Study of Automated Protocolized vs. Physician-Directed Non-Protocolized Weaning

NeoplasmsMusculoskeletal Diseases3 more

The purpose of this study was to determine whether computer-driven protocolized weaning is superior to physician-directed non-protocolized weaning in over-24-hours-ventilated surgical intensive care unit (ICU) patients. The main hypothesis was that weaning duration differs between both methods. Secondary hypotheses were that reintubation rate, duration of mechanical ventilation, intensive care unit (ICU) length of stay and workload for physicians and nurses differ between both methods.

Advanced Practice Physiotherapy Care in Emergency Departments

Musculoskeletal Diseases or ConditionsEmergency Department1 more

Overcrowding in emergency departments (ED) is a major concern worldwide. Recent reports show that Canada has among the longest ED waiting times and limited access to care has been associated with poorer outcomes for many patients. Patients suffering from musculoskeletal disorders (MSKD) represent at least 25% of all ED visits and this number is expected to increase with the aging population. New collaborative models of care have been emerging in various settings, such as EDs, and physiotherapists (PT) have been identified as expert clinicians to care for patients with MSKD. These advanced practice physiotherapy (APP) models of care often allow for a more extended scope of practice for PTs in which they have direct access to patients without a physician referral, triage patients and sometimes prescribe medical imaging or medication. ED APP has emerged as a promising new ED model of care, but evidence of the efficacy and safety of such models is still limited. Only a few RCTs have been conducted and no studies have assessed the efficacy or cost-utility of physiotherapy models of care for patients with MSKD in Canadian EDs. Evaluation of the benefits of such models is highly context-dependent and systematic evaluation of these models is warranted to support further implementation in Canada. The aim of this multicenter stepped-wedge cluster RCT and cost analysis is to compare the effectiveness of a direct access APP model of care compared to usual physician ED care for persons presenting to an ED with a MSKD, in terms of pain, function, health care resources utilization and costs. Evidence-based development of new APP models of care in EDs could help improve access and quality of care for Canadians, thus relieving some of the pressure on our healthcare system by providing new innovative pathways of access to care for these patients.

Hematoma Distraction Arthroplasty Versus Arthroscopic Trapeziectomy in Basal Thumb Arthritis

Orthopedic Disorder

The basal joint, also referred to as the carpometacarpal (CMC) joint, of the thumb is one of the joints most commonly affected by arthritis. CMC joint arthritis can lead to decreased grip and pinch strength and impairment of activities of daily living

An Extension Study of Ataluren (PTC124) in Participants With Nonsense Mutation Dystrophinopathy...

Muscular DystrophyDuchenne11 more

The primary objective of this study is to obtain long term safety data of ataluren in male participants with nonsense mutation dystrophinopathy (who participated and completed a previous Phase 3 study of ataluren [PTC124-GD-020-DMD {NCT01826487}]) to augment the overall safety database. Screening and baseline procedures are structured to avoid a gap in treatment between the double-blind study (PTC124-GD-020-DMD) and this extension study. This study may be further extended by amendment until either ataluren becomes commercially available or the clinical development of ataluren in duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is discontinued.

Acute Effect of Topical Menthol on Neck Pain

Musculoskeletal Disorders

Topical menthol gels are classified 'topical analgesics' and are used to relieve aching and tenderness of muscles and joints. However, double-blind randomized controlled trials are lacking. Here the investigators examine - in a double-blind randomized controlled cross-over trial - the acute effect of topical menthol (Biofreeze) and placebo (gel with a menthol scent) on neck pain.
