Preoperative Decolonization and Surgical Site Infections - a Prospective Randomized Trial

Orthopedic DisordersSurgical Site Infection

Surgical site infections are a major postoperative complication and are mostly due to colonization with endogenous germs, like Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis or Propionibacterium acnes. In literature, preoperative decolonization procedures showed a trend in lowering surgical site infection rates, but especially in orthopedic surgery data is controversial and randomized controlled trials are lacking. In the main study, the study investigators aim at performing a controlled prospective randomized interventional trial to measure the impact of preoperative decolonization of nasal Staphylococcus aureus carriers on surgical site infection rates in orthopedic surgery. In an alongside study a controlled prospective randomized interventional trial to measure the impact of preoperative skin decolonization of patients undergoing an orthopedic procedure will be conducted.

Participatory Organizational Intervention for Improved Use of Assistive Devices for Patient Handling...

Musculoskeletal DisordersOccupational Injuries

Epidemiological studies have shown that patient transfer is a risk factor for back pain, back injuries and long term sickness absence, whereas consistent use of assistive devices during patient transfer is associated with reduced risk of back injury. In consequence, Danish hospitals have made great efforts to increase knowledge, availability and use of assistive devices to reduce work-related physical strain due to patient transfer. Yet, a recent survey among more than 300 nurses and nurses' aides showed that two thirds rarely uses assistive devices during patient transfer. Thus it seems relevant to investigate barriers, opportunities and practical solutions for increasing use of assistive devices among healthcare workers. The purpose of this study is to evaluate a participatory organizational intervention for improved use of assistive devices during patient transfer.

Validation of the Utility of an Artificial System for the Large-scale Screening of Scoliosis

Orthopedic Disorder of SpineArtificial Intelligence1 more

Traditional school scoliosis screening approaches remains debatable due to unnecessary referal and excessive cost. Deep learning algorithms have proven to be powerful tools for the detection of multiple diseases; however, the application of such methods in scoliosis screening requires further assessment and validation. Here, the investigators develop an artificial system for the automated screening of scoliosis using disrobed back images, and conduct clinical trial to validate if the diagnostic system can offsetting the shortcomings of human doctors.

Musculoskeletal Complaints in an Industry

Musculoskeletal Disorder

The hypothesis of this study is that there will be a variety of factors influencing the musculoskeletal complaints among workers of different sectors. Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) account for more than 30% of occupational diseases in the world. In order to organize the strategic actions that will be developed for the prevention of MSDs, it is essential to analyze in advance the peculiar situations of the different sectors of a workplace. The objectives of this study were to determine the prevalence of musculoskeletal complaints among workers in a medium-sized industry by comparing its sectors and to investigate the influence of occupational and non-occupational factors in the increase of complaints.
