Mind-body Therapy (Remotely Delivered) for Knee Osteoarthritis
Knee OsteoarthritisThis proposal aims to provide crucial knowledge about the neurobiological mechanisms underlying Tai Chi mind-body therapy for knee osteoarthritis (OA). The central mechanism of knee OA pain will be investigated using brain imaging technology to evaluate how brain function and structure change in response to mind-body exercise over time. Sixty eligible individuals who meet the American College of Rheumatology criteria for knee OA will be randomized into Tai Chi or wellness education interventions for 12 weeks. The investigators will compare changes in resting state functional connectivity of the cognitive control network, and functional magnetic resonance imaging responses to pressure pain and brain morphometry, as well as their association with clinical outcomes. The findings will lead to the establishment of a new treatment paradigm in OA and have broad application to the management of chronic musculoskeletal pain.

A repeated measures and single-blinded randomized study were done. Thirty-eight patients 24 hours after TKA were randomly assigned to either low intensity exercises (LIE) group or high intensity exercises (HIE) group. An exercise programs lasted for five days during the hospitalization period. Pain severity was assessed by Visual Analog Scale (VAS) (0-10 mm). Pressure pain thresholds (PPTs) were measured over quadriceps and biceps brachii and muscles immediately before and after exercise.

After total knee arthroplasty intervention, it is recommended that the patient performs a rehabilitation procedure to minimize deficits caused by surgery. In this job it is essential to insist on the importance of recovering balance after total knee arthroplasty intervention, and assess a specifically designed protocol to restore its function. An intervention which includes a dynamometric platform as a training method was proposed. The randomized clinical trial compared a control group that performed balance exercises on parallel bars, unstable plates, ramps and stairs against an experimental group that included dynamometric platforms training as a differentiator.
