Biomechanical Osteoarthritis Outcomes in Meniscectomy Patients
Meniscus InjuryMeniscectomy2 moreThe key aim of this study is to examine biomechanical measures associated with osteoarthritis (OA) progression in patients who have lateral and medial menisci injuries during various tasks. The likelihood is that individuals who have a meniscal injury often develop knee osteoarthritis. Therefore understanding biomechanical changes from the injury, specifically undertaking both functional and sporting activities, may provide a conservative approach to delaying or minimising the development of OA. Three-dimensional kinetic and kinematic measures will be assessed during seven tasks (walking, running, side cuts, single leg landing, small knee bend squat and isokinetic leg strength), prior to and following treatment. In addition, Strength and balance will be assessed to indicate if there is more work in the rehabilitation program that is needed for functional movement.

Knee OsteoarthritisThe most commonly prescribed mobility aid, the walking cane, is often underloaded and therefore fails to reduce knee joint loading and provide symptomatic relief for those with knee osteoarthritis. For this study, a novel walking cane with haptic biofeedback was designed to improve cane loading. The purpose of this study was twofold; 1) to determine the effectiveness of a novel walking haptic biofeedback cane to encourage proper cane loading compared with a conventional cane, and 2) to determine whether scale training or haptic feedback influences short term retention of cane loading. It is hypothesized that haptic biofeedback would increase cane loading (H1) and decrease knee loading (peak knee adduction moment (H2) and knee adduction angular impulse (H3)) when compared to naïve cane use.

Exercise on Knee OA With the Star Excursion Balance Test
OsteoarthritisOsteo Arthritis KneeOsteoarthritis is a prevalent and disabling condition. Exercise is recommended to maintain strength and mobility, and to decrease pain. However, acute bouts of exercise have conflicting outcomes: they are fatiguing and they also can increase coordination and balance. The purpose of this study is to assess the effects of a single bout of exercise (30 minutes) on balance performance of individuals with self-identified unilateral knee osteoarthritis. Balance will be assessed using the star excursion balance test before and after the exercise session. Differences in performance between the two star excursion balance tests will reflect the changes due to exercise. The changes between their balance performance on each limb will reflect the changes due to osteoarthritis.
Do Taping and Orthosis Affect Pain, Gait, or Functionality in Mild Knee Osteoarthritis?
OsteoarthritisKneeObjective: The aim of this study was to compare the effects of elastic taping, rigid taping, and braces applied to women with mild knee Osteoartritis(OA) on pain, gait, and knee functionality. Methods: This randomised study included 21 female patients (mean age of 53.81±6.20 years) with bilateral grade 2 knee OA according to the Kellgren & Lawrence Classification. Pain was evaluated with the visual analog scale, functionality was evaluated with the Western Ontario McMaster Osteoarthritis Index, and the kinetic, kinematic, and spatiotemporal parameters were evaluated using a three-dimensional gait analysis system at baseline (no application) and immediately after the application of elastic taping, rigid taping, and orthoses. The dependent variables were measured after 45 minute the application of four different conditions neutral, elastic taping, rigid taping, and knee brace on each participant with 1-day intervals.

Additionally, this study will search for correlations between serum and urinary biomarkers Coll2-1 and Coll2-1NO2 at baseline with the radiographic, MRI and clinical severity of knee osteoarthritis.

Secondary objectives will be to evaluate and compare pain levels, qualitative outcomes, and the impact of NMES on pain medication requests between groups. It is possible that strengthening the quadriceps muscles and improving their activation will reduce postoperative pain and help patients return to activities sooner than with standard therapy alone.

OsteoarthritisKneeIn this proposal, we plan to dynamically investigate brain response to verum acupuncture (of two different "doses") and placebo acupuncture, using a paradigm that approximates clinical acupuncture practice across multiple treatment sessions in knee osteoarthritis (OA) patients. This proposal aims to: 1) characterize session-to-session brain responses to verum / sham acupuncture treatment (reliability of response) for OA patients, and 2) investigate how different "doses" of acupuncture influence brain response and acupuncture efficacy (impact of dose). The findings of this project will deepen our biological understanding on why and how acupuncture can treat chronic pain and what happens in the brain during the multiple-session acupuncture treatment.
