Osteoarthritis is a common disease that causes muscle weakness, stiffness and instability. The disease reduces the opportunities for an active lifestyle. Exercise Therapy provides a well-documented effect on pain and function in patients with osteoarthritis of the hip. It is sought an optimal dose of exercise, in which this study will help to investigate. We hypothesize that an exercise program designed to have a high number of repetitions will benefit the outcome of the training in a more positive way than a low-repetition based program.

Hip osteoarthritis is degeneration of hip cartilage and inflammation of subchondral bone and soft tissue linings. Patients have pain, stiffness, swelling, and difficulty walking. There are treatments available to help manage these symptoms like weight loss, and analgesics. Surgery is the appropriate treatment in patients who have failed these conservative treatments. The aim of this clinical study is to assess safety of autologous cultured chondrocyte intra-articular injection and obtain its clinical results in patients with severe hip osteoarthritis.

The objective of this study is to assess the changes in daily physical activity and gait pattern, following a viscosupplement injection among a population who is suffering from hip osteoarthritis. A kinetic and kinematic gait analysis, an Actigraph activity monitor, a functional Timed-Stair-Test and two questionnaires (Medical Outcome Study Short-Form36 (MOS-SF36), Hip disability and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (HOOS)) about how the pathology affects the quality of life, will be use.

Exercise in Patients With Osteoarthritis of the Hip

According to Danish and international guidelines the recommended first-line of management for people with osteoarthritis consist of exercise, education, analgesic medication, and, if necessary, weight reduction. It is well documented that exercise has a positive effect on pain and physical function in patients with knee OA, but the effect of exercise on hip OA is sparsely investigated. Aim of the study: To investigate the effects of 1) strength training, and 2) Nordic Walking, and 3) unsupervised home based exercise on muscle function, endurance, pain level, physical activity, and health related quality of life in patients with osteoarthritis of the hip. The effects of exercise on muscle mass and the mechanisms behind the osteoarthritis, i.e., disease activity, inflammation, and cartilage degradation, are investigated in a subgroup (n=45) of the participants. Study hypotheses: Strength training will have a greater effect on physical function and muscle strength than Nordic Walking and home based exercise; 2) Nordic Walking will have a greater effect on endurance than strength training and unsupervised home based exercise; 3) Strength training and Nordic Walking will have a greater effect on pain level and health related quality of life than unsupervised home based exercise.

Bone Remodeling Around HA-coated Acetabular Cups.

This study was designed to investigate the influence of HA-coating on bone remodeling around the cup in cementless THA. 100 patients gave informed consent to participate in a controlled randomized study between porous coated Trilogy® versus Trilogy Calcicoat®. The cup was inserted in press-fit fixation. The femoral component was a cementless porous coated titanium alloy stem (Bi-Metric®), with a modular 28 mm CrCo head. Effect parameters were Harris Hip Score (HHS) and Bone Mineral Density (BMD) determined by DEXA scanning. Measurements revealed no difference between the two groups after 3 years, neither in clinical outcome nor in terms of periprosthetic bone density. Patients with Body Mass Index above normal regained more bone mineral than patients with normal weight. This finding supports the assumption that load is beneficial to bone remodeling. Advantages of better sealing of the bone-prosthesis interface, preventing polyethylene induced osteolysis, may still be anticipated for the 7 or 12 year follow-up examinations
