Goal of the research To check the viability of "Operating Table Position Simulating Radiographs", while positioned on the contralateral side. To determine whether knowledge about the angles displayed on this radiograph (pelvic tilt) influences the accurate positioning of the acetabular cup during the Total Hip Replacement procedure.

The purpose of this study is to determine if there is a difference in stress shielding and bone resorption of the proximal femur in two anatomical stem total hip designs.

The purpose of this study is to compare the articular surface replacement (ASR) prosthesis placed by the conventional positioning method and the ASR prosthesis placed by 'computer assisted surgery' (CAS) in variation between pre planned position of the femoral component and the actual position of the femoral component of the prosthesis. The hypothesis is that this variation is larger with the conventional positioning method than when CAS is used.

Prospective study including 6 groups of 20 patients with a total hip prosthesis. Five different types of metal-on-metal prostheses are studied, and 1 group with ceramic-on-ceramic prostheses acts as control group. Patients undergo a clinical evaluation and blood sampling preoperatively, and 3, 6, 12 and 24 months postoperatively.

This is a pilot investigator initiated/sponsored clinical trial to evaluate the feasibility of using real-time DexCom G6 continuous glucose monitor (CGM or glucose sensor) trend data and an insulin-dosing algorithm to control the glucose levels of type 2 diabetic patients undergoing hip/knee orthopedic surgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital (TJUH). Blinded CGM glucose data will be recorded prior to hospital admission, during hospital admission, and after hospital discharge to evaluate glucose control in this diabetic patient population in relationship to clinical outcomes (20 days of recorded blinded CGM data maximum). Prior studies have associated hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia, and glycemic variability with an increased incidence of nosocomial infection, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, cardiac arrhythmias, mental status changes, hospital length of stay, and cost. The 20 type 2 diabetic patients in the Control Group will be managed according to standard-of-care methods at TJUH using finger-stick blood glucose measurements in an attempt to maintain the patient's blood glucose levels in the desired target range (80 to 180 mg/dL). Three blinded CGM will be used to record the patient's glucose trend data for future download to a computer and analysis. The 40 type 2 diabetic patients in the Investigational Group will be managed by the orthopedic floor nurses using the real-time DexCom G6 CGM trend data to determine the appropriate therapy to maintain the patient's glucose levels in the desired target range (80 to 180 mg/dL). In addition, three blinded CGM will be used to record the patient's glucose trend data for future download to a computer and analysis. The primary objective of this pilot study is to observe the blood glucose values and glucose sensor (CGM) values of diabetic patients before, during and after hospitalization for hip and knee arthroplasty surgery to determine whether there is a correlation between glucose control and clinical outcomes. This pilot data will be used to plan a future clinical trial in orthopedic surgery patients using CGM to determine patterns of hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia, and glycemic variability that correlate with clinical complications, hospital length of stay, and cost.

This study will investigate the safety of three fixed dose levels of tanezumab (2.5 mg, 5 mg, and 10 mg) administered at an 8-week interval by subcutaneous injection multiple (7) times during the study treatment period.

Hip osteoarthritis (HOA) is a common cause of pain and disability in aging population. Conservative treatment is based on lifestyle modifications, physical therapy, analgesic and anti-inflammatory medications and intra articular injections. This Prospective Pilot Study aims at investigating the efficacy of Ultrasound-Guided Cooled Radiofrequency Hip Denervation as a treatment offered to patients with HOA.

Osteoarthritis leads to reduced independence and quality of life. Total hip replacement is a successful and cost-effective surgical intervention to relieve pain and improve functioning in patients with osteoarthritis. Research has shown that preoperative health status strongly predicts outcomes including physical function and hospitalization length after hip replacement surgery. Frail patients, in particular, are at greater risk of poor postoperative outcomes and could potentially benefit from interventions targeting an improvement in their health status prior to undergoing a hip or knee replacement surgery. Partnering with the YMCA and a multi-disciplinary team of healthcare providers, this pilot trial will examine the feasibility of a multi-modal intervention for frail patients that includes a supervised exercise program, vitamin D and protein supplementation, and a medication review. The results of this feasibility study will guide the design of a future multi-centre study, which if successful, could be developed into a routine model of care that is implemented in joint replacement programs across Ontario and ultimately improving the lives of frail seniors undergoing hip or knee replacement.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of a functional task-training program combined with therapeutic ultrasound on pain, strength, gait biomechanics and functionality in adults with hip osteoarthritis.

This is a single-site, three-arm, parallel-group randomized clinical trial (RCT). The clinical effects of a nurse-led, very brief, preoperative mindfulness-based intervention for hip and knee replacement patients will be investigated relative to an audio-recorded very brief, preoperative mindfulness-based intervention delivered during the standard nurse consult and a nurse-led preoperative pain psychoeducation intervention during the standard nurse consult.
