The Effects of Elmore Oil on Patients With Osteoarthritis
Degenerative ArthritisInflammationThe treatment of osteoarthritis, a disease that eventually affects the majority of the older population, involves the alleviation of symptoms such as pain and stiffness, and the reduction of inflammation. A double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study will be performed to examine the effect of topical application of Elmore Oil, a herbal remedy (containing Eucalyptus oil, Tea tree oil, Olive oil and Vanilla), which has recently been reported to have anti-inflammatory properties, on the symptoms of osteoarthritis.
Correlation Between Alignment of Lower Limb and Clinical Outcome After Total Knee Prosthesis.

Radiological measurements by means of 3D technology will be performed. The clinical result will be stipulated by means of standardized questionnaires (KOOS, KSS and Oxford knee score-questionnaire).
Systemic Effects of Chronic Metal Ion Exposure From Metal-on Metal Hip Resurfacing
OsteoarthritisIn recent years hip resurfacing has become a very popular alternative treatment to total hip replacement for the treatment of hip arthritis. This procedure has become particularly common in the young patient with arthritis because of perceived benefits in terms of functional outcome. However, it has recently become apparent that hip resurfacing is associated with a range of adverse events, not typically seen in patients with conventional hip replacement. These include hip fracture, and failure of bone to grow onto the fixation surfaces of the implant. It has also become apparent that hip resurfacing results in the release of high concentrations of dissolved metals in the bloodstream, such as cobalt and chromium. Whilst small concentrations of these metals are essential for normal body functions, such as making red blood cells, in high concentrations their effects can be toxic to many cells and organs of the body, such as bone, the brain, heart, liver and kidneys, as well as disturbing hormones and blood cholesterol levels. Whilst several studies have documented levels of these metal ions of 440 times normal levels in hip resurfacing patients, there are no studies that have examined whether these levels are having a toxic effect on the various organ systems of the body (with the exception of renal function). In this study we plan to explore whether there are differences in bone mineral density, accumulation of metal ions in the brain, and other solid organs, heart and hormonal function between subjects who have had a hip resurfacing 5 or more years previously compared to an individually matched group of subjects after conventional hip replacement.

OsteoarthritisThe primary research question is: Does expedited hip and knee replacement result in improved lower-extremity function at 36 months post randomization as measured by the Western Ontario McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC)? A secondary component to this question is whether expedited surgery improves pain and stiffness scores as measured by the WOMAC and generic QOL as measured by the Medical Outcomes Study Short-Form 36 (SF-36) and Health Utilities Index Mark 3 (HUI3)? Secondary questions are: Does joint-specific and generic QOL deteriorate significantly during waiting? Does prolonged waiting increase the economic cost associated with hip and knee arthroplasty? And does expedited surgery have an effect on patient satisfaction with major joint replacement?

Persona MC vs Attune Total Knee Replacement Study
Knee OsteoarthritisThis study aims to compare clinical and functional outcomes of a cohort of patients that have undergone a medial congruent TKR to a similar cohort of patients that have undergone a conventional TKR and a cohort of control participants.
