Study of the Laboratory-based Evaluation of the Degrees of Activity of Osteoarthritis
OsteoarthritisThis study evaluates laboratory-based method to estimate the degrees of activity of medium and large joint osteoarthritis.
Observational Study Investigating the Effectiveness of Fentanyl Matrix in Relieving Pain and Improving...
PainOsteoarthritis3 moreThe purpose of this study is to investigate the utility of fentanyl matrix for the treatment of pain due to osteoarthritis (OA) of knee or hip, which was not adequately controlled by non-opioid analgesic (e.g. NSAIDs or COX-II inhibitors) or weak opioids [tramadol HClacetaminophen, tramadol or codeine (or combinations with acetaminophen/ibuprofen)].
Molecular Biomarkers Associated With Degenerative Joint Disease in the Knee
Cartilage DiseasesThis investigation describes a novel complex of structural degradation proteins that is associated with pain in individuals with meniscal pathology undergoing arthroscopic partial meniscectomy. The presence of the complex in the synovial fluid of the knee is sensitive and specific for the painful state compared with similar aged controls. The absence of the complex in asymptomatic controls makes it a useful biomarker for the disease state.
Postural Analysis in Patients With Knee Osteoarthritis
OsteoarthritisOsteoarthritis is the result of the degeneration of the cartilage to articulate, being currently considered as having an multifactorial cause. The knees are one of the affected joints more due to overload that constitutes the main activator or determinative mechanism for the development of the illness. Beyond pain it has important reduction of the amplitude of movement and the muscular force that causes functional limitation and posture's alterations intervening with the activities of daily life. Therefore, the main objective of this study will be to characterize the posture's alterations and the electromiographic activity in patients with osteoarthritis of knees. For this study 30 citizens will be evaluated, 15 with diagnosis of OA of knees unilaterally and 15 healthful citizens, both the groups will be of the feminine sex with age between 60 to 80 years. The selected patients will answer a questionnaire of personal dates and will have an evaluation fiche, in which will be written down: age, index of corporal mass (IMC), index of Lesquene, index WOMAC (Western Ontario and Mac Master), personal and familiar date of the diagnosis, antecedents, instituted treatments, date of the last x-ray, radiological classification of the osteoarthritis according to Scale of Kellgren, electromiographics date and seeming of the postural evaluation. For the electromiographic evaluation the activity of the muscles vastus lateralis and medial oblique in the isometric contraction maximum volunteer (ICMV) and in the march will be analyzed. And for the postural evaluation will be made three photographs in the sights previous frontal and sagittal right and left, being that, for the analysis of the posturais alterations the program will be used SAPO.
Chronic Knee Pain Study
Knee OsteoarthritisSpecific Aims: 1) To examine differences between AA and white patients with knee OA in willingness to consider knee joint replacement. 2) To examine the relationship between socio-cultural factors and patient willingness to consider joint replacement. 3) To examine how demographic, socio-cultural, and clinical factors mediate the relationship between race and patient willingness. 4) To examine the relationship between patient willingness and referral to orthopedic care for knee OA (secondary aim). Experimental design/Methodology: A cross-sectional survey study design will be used to examine socio-cultural and clinical factors that may vary by race/ethnicity and may be determinants of willingness to consider joint replacement as a treatment option. Patients with symptomatic and radiographic knee OA from the primary care clinics will be surveyed. Only individuals with knee OA of sufficient severity that would be considered candidates for joint replacement will be included. Analytic strategies include ordinal logistic regression, path analysis, and regression trees. Subject population: The study sample will consist of approximately 133 African American and 419 white patients with OA of the knee in a primary care setting.
Obesity and the Initiation of Knee Osteoarthritis
ObesityHealthy adults aged 20-60 of varying weights will participate in this minimally invasive study. There is one 4-hour appointment for which subjects are paid $120. The tests involve: 1 tube blood draw, 1 gait test (motion capture) and 1 MR of both knees.
MRI Markers of Cartilage Damage in Knee With Osteoarthritis
OsteoarthritisKneeThe objectives of this study are: to identify and develop techniques to minimize precision errors in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) evaluation of knee cartilage, and to determine if results from newly-identified MRI techniques in measuring cartilage changes and structure can be reproduced.
MR Imaging of Knee Osteoarthritis and Acute Knee Injuries
OsteoarthritisKneeThe purpose of this study is to use better magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques to examine the knee and the bony and soft tissue changes so as to better predict the progression of osteoarthritis and acute knee injuries.
Osteoarthritis: Weakness From Inflammation
OsteoarthritisThe purpose of this study is to understand the factors that lead to muscle weakness with arthritis and aging.
