The Effect of Zoledronic Acid on Bone Density in Liver Transplant Patients

OsteoporosisLiver Transplantation1 more

Following liver transplantation, rapid bone loss occurs, particularly within the first 6 months post-transplant. This may be associated with fractures, most notable vertebral. The ability to assess osteoporosis therapies in this system may provide useful information for osteoporosis management in general. Hypotheses: That treatment with the bisphosphonate, zoledronate, at the time of liver transplantation and at 1 month post-transplantation will prevent the early transplant-related bone loss (measured by bone densitometry and biochemical bone markers at 3 months) seen in patients who are not treated with a bisphosphonate That continuing treatment with zoledronate at 3 monthly intervals for a total duration of 12 months will result in further improvements in bone density beyond that seen at 3 months That calcium and vitamin D (vit D) supplementation of liver transplant patients does not prevent marked bone loss following transplantation.

Bone Estrogen Strength Training

Osteoporosis

We started the Bone, Estrogen, Strength Training (BEST) study in the fall of 1995 at the University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona. The BEST study is the largest of its kind. It looks at the effects of hormone replacement therapy and strength training exercise on bone mineral density. (Bone mineral density affects bone strength and the risk of osteoporosis.) Six groups of about 300 women each participated in this osteoporosis prevention study. In 1998, the BEST study received additional funding to examine for another 2 years the long-term effects of strength training on bone mineral density. By 2001 we will have finished analyzing the results for all study groups on the 1-year effects of exercise on bone, as well as additional analyses on the effects of 2, 3, and 4 years of strength training and weight-bearing exercise on bone.

Is Osteoporosis Education Effective in Parkinsonian Patients

OsteoporosisParkinson Disease

The effects of osteoporosis (OP) education on OP patients and the normal population studied and described in numerous studies. But the effects of OP education on Parkinsonian patients have not been sufficiently elucidated. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of OP education on the OP knowledge level and daily life in Parkinsonian patients. Our hypothesis is; to Parkinsonian patients; there is a statistically significant difference in terms of OP knowledge level and daily life between giving only informative leaflets about OP and also providing structured OP education. 54 participants aged 50 and older with Parkinson's Disease were randomized to the experimental and control groups. While only leaflets were given to the control group, structured OP education was also given to the experimental group. Patients were evaluated with the same structured face-to-face interviews at the entrance and 12 weeks later.

Effects of a 12-week Home-based Yoga on Bone and Cardiovascular Health

OsteoporosisCardiovascular Risk Factor

While effects of specific exercise interventions on bone and CVD in postmenopausal women have been demonstrated and evaluated, the effects of randomized controlled exercise interventions, particularly in middle-aged premenopausal women are sparse. Therefore, it is imperative to examine the relation between behavioral interventions and bone and cardiovascular outcomes in premenopausal women as this understudied group is at high risk for the initial stages of bone loss and cardiovascular disease development.

Tart Cherry Supplementation and Women's Bone Health Study

OsteoporosisPostmenopausal2 more

In spite of aggressive approaches to prevent and treat osteoporosis, it remains one of the most costly and debilitating diseases associated with aging. The pursuit of alternative approaches for preventing bone loss has included the investigation of a number of promising plant-based foods that can be incorporated into the diet. This project is an extension of our pre-clinical studies with tart cherry, designed to determine whether the findings from our animal study can be extended to humans. Thus, the purpose of this project is to investigate the dose-dependent effect of tart cherry juice consumption on biomarkers of bone metabolism in women, aged 65-80 years. The hypothesis to be tested is that three months of tart cherry supplementation will improve bone biomarkers in a dose-dependent manner. Moreover, these improvements in bone metabolism will correspond to a decrease in markers of inflammation and oxidative stress.

The Effect of Yoga Asana 'Vrksasana (Tree Pose)' on Balance in the Patients With Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis

Patients with T score of bone mineral densitometry less than or equal to -2.5 will be included in the study. Initial evaluation consists of obtaining demographic data, performing international physical activity questionnaire (short form) Additionally; Berg balance test, timed sit and walk test, single leg stance test, tandem walk test, tandem stance test will be performed. Baseline static and dynamic balance scores of patients will be determined by the Corebalance Premiere-19 balance device. After acclimation the device and tests, 3 measurements will be made and the most successful score will be taken. The lowest value will be showing best performance. After the first evaluation, patients will be randomized using windows excel randomization option to two groups by another observer. Patients will be blinded about which exercise group they will be separated to. Both groups will be thought exercise series which will be based on recommendations which is published on October 2016 by UK national osteoporosis foundation. Patients would be encouraged to perform the exercises on recommended basis and handouts will be given to patients in both groups. The yoga group will also be taught "tree pose". Patients will be encouraged to note their exercises regularly on daily basis. Patients will be reevaluated after first and third months and balance tests will be re-performed to determine the effect of given exercises. Exclusion criteria Neurological or vestibule dysfunctions which may affect balance Severe mental disturbances effecting communication Locomotor dysfunction which prevents patient to perform balance tests Active musculoskeletal pathology which disrupt performing exercises.
