This is multiple center, prospective study aiming to investigate the tracking and outcome of patients attending Greek General hospitals with low-trauma fractures. Secondary end-points were to facilitate the implementation of coordinated, multi-disciplinary models of care for secondary fracture prevention, and to monitor osteoporosis treatment initiation, osteoporosis treatment persistence at 12 months, compliance, and subsequent fractures.

Osteoporosis Awareness Survey of Women in Champagne Ardenne

Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is characterized by low bone mineral density and alterations in bone microarchitecture, leading to bone fragility and high risk of fractures. In the peri-menopausal period and during menopause, estrogen deficiency is responsible for an acceleration of bone remodeling. It is therefore important to sensitize women to this pathology at the beginning of menopause. Osteoporosis is a public health issue with more than 3 million women in France suffering from almost ¼ of the population over 50 years old. Paradoxically, the number of bone densitometry and prescribed osteoporosis drugs are decreasing. There is an under-screening and a disinterest of the pathology on the part of the medical world and the patients. The investigators hypothesize that women lack knowledge about osteoporosis. This study will identify these gaps, and put in place appropriate strategies to improve this knowledge. For this purpose, a descriptive cross-sectional observational study will carry out, through the fulfillment of self-administered questionnaire for women over 30 years old. The main objective is to assess the knowledge of women, about osteoporosis and its consequences. The judgment criterion is based on a percentage of correct answers per question. The interests of the study are to identify gaps in knowledge, to optimize the investigator's therapeutic education, to fight patient wait-and-see and false beliefs, and finally to improve adherence and longer-term adherence.

Study to demonstrate that the Bone UltraSonic Scanner (BUSS) can aid in detection of osteoporosis and predict prevalent osteoporotic fractures. Measurements derived from the BUSS parameters will be able to discriminate between postmenopausal women with osteoporotic fractures when compared to matched controls without history of osteoporotic fracture.

Follow-up questionnaires have been sent out in 1997 and in 2008-09.

Longitudinal Study of Bone Mineral Density in Survivors of Solid Pediatric Cancers

Osteoporosis

Specific subgroups of children who survive treatment for childhood malignancies have been shown to develop relative osteopenia following chemotherapy and are felt to be at risk for developing osteoporosis later in life due to their inability to reach peak bone mass during childhood. Based upon an earlier study in our department, the investigators reported conclusive evidence that approximately half of survivors of pediatric solid malignancies are at risk for these problems. However, the proportion of patients in our population that showed osteopenia/osteoporosis was lower than that in other similar cross-sectional studies in solid tumors such as osteosarcoma. The main difference between our report and the osteosarcoma study was duration of follow-up, with ours being shorter. Longer follow-up may prove that a larger proportion of our patients are affected. The purpose is to perform a longitudinal follow-up study of bone mineral density using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) in adult survivors of solid pediatric tumors that were previously studied as subjects in our original cross-sectional study. The primary hypothesis is that the proportion of pediatric solid cancer survivors with significantly lower bone mineral density (BMD) compared to established age group controls will be increased with the additional time that has elapsed since the original study despite the fact that the patients are young and would not normally be expected to have osteopenia/osteoporosis at this age.

Klinefelter syndrome (KS) is the most common sex-chromosome disorder with a prevalence of one in 660 men and is a frequent cause of hypogonadism and infertility. It is caused by the presence of extra X-chromosomes, the most common karyotype being 47,XXY. The phenotype is variable, but the most constant finding is small hyalinized testes, hypergonadotrophic hypogonadism, infertility, eunuchoid body proportion, increased height and learning disabilities. Klinefelter syndrome has been associated with increased prevalence of diabetes, osteoporosis and cardiovascular diseases but the pathogenesis is unknown. Accordingly the aim of the study was to investigate measures of body composition, insulin sensitivity, bone mineral density, echocardiography, as well as biochemical markers of endocrine, metabolic and bone function in KS and an age-matched control group.
