The Effects of Bovine Colostrum in Bone Metabolism in Humans

OsteopeniaOsteoporosis

Osteoporosis constitutes a major public health concern. For instance, in European Union 1 in 3 women and at least 1 in 6 men will suffer an osteoporotic fracture during their lifespan. The burden of osteoporosis is estimated to raise 25% by 2025. Worldwide, by 2050, the incidence of osteoporotic fractures is expected to increase 240% in women and 310% in men compared to 1990. The aforementioned estimates might indicate the existence of some gaps related to current products on the market for prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. Actually, the use of the approved pharmacological agents for osteoporosis have been decreasing in European Union and worldwide. Patients are becoming increasingly reluctant to take medicines; even those with severe osteoporosis are refusing treatment. Recent published reports on the matter revealed that patients fear the side effects of current pharmacological agents. Actually, therapy with bisphosphonates, the most prescribed medication for the treatment of postmenopausal, glucocorticoid-induced and male osteoporosis has been associated with severe side effects as osteonecrosis of the jaw and atypical femoral fractures. Colostrum, a milky substance produced by mammals, known to be responsible for the development of the immune and skeleton systems of the offspring, has on its constituent's lactoferrin (LF). This multi-functional protein has been shown to affect both bone resorbing and bone formation pathways. The safety and tolerance on the use of bovine colostrum in humans (children and adults) have been well documented; it has a 'Generally Recognized As Safe' status from the United States Food and Drug Administration. Allergies and lactose intolerance, which are main shortcomings of milk consumption, have not been reported in relation to colostrum. Actually, human colostrum and bovine colostrum share the same bioactive components, but bovine sources are more potent than that of human. In accordance, bovine colostrum supplementation has been used in several therapeutic applications as gastrointestinal disorders, allergies and autoimmune diseases, viral and bacterial illnesses, and HIV-associated immunomodulation HIV. However, the effectiveness of bovine colostrum (as a whole and not only LF) to reduce bone losses has not been considered yet. Therefore, this study aims at analyzing the effects of bovine colostrum in diminishing bone mass losses in humans.

Investigation of the Effects of Physical Activity in Women at Risk of Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis Risk

The goal of this clinical trial is to investigate the effects of the increase in the physical activity level of women at risk for osteoporosis in the post-menopausal period on the physical fitness, functional fitness age and quality of life. The main question it aims to answer is: • Does the increase in the level of physical activity positively affect the physical fitness parameters (strength, endurance, balance, agility and flexibility), functional fitness ages and quality of life of post-menopausal women with moderate to high osteoporosis risk? Participants in the intervention group were given the Otago Exercise Program, which will last 3 days a week and an average of 30 minutes per day for 12 weeks. The exercises were done one-by-one with a physiotherapist. No program were applied to the participants in the control group, and they were asked to continue their daily living activities in the same way. Researchers will compare two groups to see if there is a difference in effects of Otogo Exercise Program on physical fitness, functional fitness age, and quality of life.

Soluble Corn Fiber Effect on Bone Resorption in Post Menopausal Women

OsteoporosisPostmenopausal

This study is designed to study the dose response effect of continuous Soluble Corn Fiber (SCF) intake over a 50 day period on bone resorption in healthy post menopausal women using the 41Calcium methodology. To further understand the dose response effect of SCF bone biomarkers will be studied. Our hypothesis is that soluble corn fiber will reduce bone resorption in a dose dependent manner in comparison to placebo when estimated by urinary 41Calcium excretion as well as bone biomarkers of resorption.

Osteoporosis and Fall Prevention With Multiple Interventions in the Metropolitan Area

Osteoporosis Fracture

OBJECTIVES To determine the effects of 3 exercise interventions on sarcopenic indices among community-dwelling older adults with high osteoporotic fracture risks. MATERIAL AND METHOD The current study enrolled subjects who screened high risk of fall, osteoporosis/fracture by standardized questionnaires or FRAX. Subjects at the National Taiwan University Hospital Bei-Hu Branch (NTUHBB) were randomized into integrated care group (ICG, target n=50) and muscle training group (MTG, target n=50). Subjects from Lingko Chang Gung Memorial Hospital (LCGMH) were all assigned into X-box group (XBG, target n=30). All participants received a CD-ROM and a one education on osteoporosis, sarcopenia, frailty, fall prevention, nutrition, and coping strategy and another hour of professional led exercise program. ICG subjects received once weekly group exercise while MTG subjects received twice weekly machine-based resistence training on major muscle groups. XBG subjects rececived twice weekly exercise with X-box based programs. Major outcomes were muscle mass (measured by bio-impedance analysis), grip strength, walking speed, and lower leg extension power at baseline and after 12-weeks of intervention.

Effect of Creatine Supplementation and Exercise on Bone Health

OsteoporosisSarcopenia

Osteoporosis is an important health problem, costing the Canadian health care system over $2 billion per year. Loss of bone mineral and bone fragility is especially prevalent in postmenopausal women. Of all osteoporotic fractures, hip fractures are the most traumatic. Creatine monohydrate is a nutritional supplement that is often combined with strength training to increase strength and muscle mass. The investigators recently completed a pilot study in a small number of postmenopausal women (n=33) that showed that creatine monohydrate significantly improved hip bone mineral density during a 1-year resistance training program. In our current proposal the investigators want to determine whether creatine combined with strength training can have an even larger effect on bone mineral density at the hip if given over 2 years in a large group of postmenopausal women (n=240). The investigators also want to determine whether this leads to reduced fractures in these women for up to a year after completing the creatine and strength training program.

Tocotrienols and Bone Health of Postmenopausal Women

Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis (severe bone loss) is a bone disease with bone fragility and an increased chance for bone fractures. Women are 4 times more likely to have osteoporosis than men because there is no estrogen protection after menopause and women in general have lighter and thinner bones. Recent studies have indicated tocotrienols (one kind of vitamin E) supplement may be good for the bone health in postmenopausal women. However, no study has ever been done the role of tocotrienols in bone health in postmenopausal women. Our long-term goal is to develop a new strategy featuring a dietary supplement (i.e., tocotrienols) for slowing down bone loss in postmenopausal women. The purpose of the study is to examine the effect of 12-week tocotrienols on bone measurements in postmenopausal women. Investigators plan to recruit postmenopausal women using flyers, non-solicited e-mail system, campus announcement, local radio, newspapers, and TV scripts. We plan to enroll approximately 200 women to obtain 78 qualified women at the start of the study. After screening, qualified participants will be matched by body weight and age, and then randomly assigned to no tocotrienols, low tocotrienols, or high tocotrienols group. The outcome measures will be assessed at baseline, after 6, and after 12 weeks. Bone-related measurements will be recorded using blood and urine samples. Investigators will monitor safety of subjects after 6 and after 12 weeks. Food intake, physical activity, and quality of life will be assessed at baseline and 12 weeks. All data will be analyzed statistically.
