BiZact Tonsillectomy in the Pediatric Population

TonsillectomyTonsillitis Chronic5 more

This study has been designed to evaluate how effective the Bizact tonsillectomy device is in reducing operating time and complications that occur after surgery. This device operates in a different way than the standard device that is used for most tonsillectomies. In 2019, a study was conducted in 186 children and adults using this device in tonsillectomies. Results showed lower blood loss and shortened time in surgery. However, the rate for bleeding as a complication after surgery was the same as other procedures that are used in tonsillectomy

Quality of Life After Primary TORS vs IMRT for Patients With Early-stage Oropharyngeal Squamous...

Oropharynx CancerOropharynx Squamous Cell Carcinoma20 more

Oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) is now the most frequently diagnosed head and neck cancer in Denmark which is mainly due to the increase of Human Papillomavirus (HPV). Patients with HPV-positive OPSCC have a significantly higher survival rate compared to HPV-negative OPSCC. The traditional primary treatment modality in Denmark is Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), and in advanced stages in combination with chemotherapy. Since 2009, Transoral Robotic Surgery (TORS) has enabled surgeons to perform minimally invasive surgery as an alternative to standard radiotherapy treatment which is considered the primary treatment for OPSCC in many countries. There is a lack of randomised trials comparing long-term functional outcomes after TORS or IMRT. Current data are mostly derived from retrospective studies with selection bias. However, several small retrospective studies have shown promising results when comparing the two treatment modalities in favour of TORS with regards to treatment related swallowing function and quality of life (QoL) without compromising survival outcomes. This study aims to evaluate the early and long-term functional outcomes following two treatment arms 1) TORS combined with neck dissection and 2) IMRT±concurrent chemotherapy with a special focus on swallowing-related QoL.

Effects of an Online Hearing Support for First-time Hearing Aid Users

Hearing LossHearing Impairment5 more

The goal of this randomised controlled trial is to test a online hearing support for first-time hearing aid users. The main questions it aims to answer are short- and long-term effects on the emotional and social consequences of hearing loss that the participants experience, use of communications strategies, experienced listening in complex sound environments and perceived effectiveness and satisfaction with hearing aids.

To Develop and Validate a Nasoendoscopic Intelligent Diagnostic System for Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma...

Otolaryngological DiseaseArtificial Intelligence

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) occurs at a high frequency in southern China, northern Africa, and Alaska, with a reported incidence of 30 cases per 100 000 in Guangdong Province. Endoscopic examination and biopsy are the main methods used for detection and diagnosis of NPC. Early NPC patients achieve favourable prognoses after concurrent radiotherapy and chemotherapy in compassion with advanced NPC patients. Here, the investigators focused on the utility of artificial intelligence to detect early NPC, which based on white light imaging (WLI) and Narrow-band imaging (NBI) nasoendoscopic examination. Having access to this unique population provides an unprecedented opportunity to investigate the effect of intelligent system on diverse nasopharyngeal lesions detection and develop a novel Computer-Aided Diagnosis System.

Hearing LossDeafness3 more

The purpose of this study is to determine the feasibility of preserving low-frequency acoustic hearing in adults with a moderate degree of hearing loss in the low frequencies and severe-to-profound hearing loss in the mid-to-high frequencies who are implanted with the HiRes™ 90K Advantage implant with HiFocus™ Mid-Scala electrode.

Hearing LossPartial Deafness3 more

The purpose of this feasibility study is to evaluate whether low-frequency acoustic hearing sensitivity can be preserved in newly implanted adults with partial deafness (considerable low frequency acoustic hearing profiles with severe-to-profound high frequency sensorineural hearing loss) using the HiResolution™ 90K™ Advantage cochlear implant with the HiFocus™ Mid-Scala electrode to support the development of electro-acoustic stimulation technology (EAS).

Clinical Effect of Panfoxol of Otolaryngological Diseases of Upper Respiratory Tract Infection:...

Otologic Disease

Patients with otolaryngological diseases caused by upper respiratory tract infections, including allergic rhinitis, chronic rhinosinusitis, secretory otitis media, and oblate gland hypertrophy, were treated with all drugs from Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital, and Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine from January 2021 to December 2022. According to the treatment methods, the patients were divided into panfosol + conventional treatment group and conventional treatment group for multicenter retrospective analysis.

Evaluation of a Sensory Enrichment Multimodal Device (SEMD) on Physical Therapy Patients With Disequilibrium...

Vestibular DiseasesLabyrinth Diseases3 more

Purpose of this study is to determine the efficiency and safety of a Sensory Enrichment Multimodal Device (SEMD) when applied in conjunction with usual care vestibular-balance physical therapy for rehabilitation of patients who fall as a result of vestibular inducted disequilibrium. Study participants will receive regular physical therapy, and some will use the SEMD device while receiving usual care vestibular-balance physical therapy. The device is an elastic belt that holds eight small battery powered vibrating disks. When using the device, you will sit or stand on a force platform that measures body sway. That movement information is sent to a computer which then sends the information to you via the vibrating disks. The vibrating disks are similar to a vibrating cell phone: you can feel the vibration but it is not uncomfortable. You can also see your sway movement on the computer screen. Some tests and activities will be paced with a beeping sound. The aim of this study is six-fold: 1. Demonstrate the relative efficiency between SEMD and conventional vestibular-balance physical therapy as reported by treating physical therapists' by counting number of skills acquired in a treatment session, and the amount of time needed to acquire the skill; 2. Demonstrate greater improvement earlier on in balance test scores when using the SEMD as an adjunct to conventional vestibular-balance physical therapy; 3. Determine the difference in vestibular habituation between physical therapy plus SEMD and conventional vestibular-balance physical therapy; 4. Demonstrate a more immediate reduction in fall occurrence when using SEMD as an adjunct to conventional vestibular-balance physical therapy; 5. Determine the patient's perception of quality of life between physical therapy plus SEMD and conventional vestibular-balance physical therapy; 6. Determine difference in acquisition of large movement tasks of tandem walk, step quick-turn, and kneel-shoulder rifle-return to stand between subjects that have trained with SEMD and conventional vestibular-balance physical therapy . In addition to primary and secondary outcome measurements, efficiency of skill acquisition, devised for this study, will be evaluated by tracking the number of skills and length of time needed to acquire each skill for each physical therapy session using the Patient Skill Acquisition Chart (PSAC). Usefulness of Tandem Walk, Step Quick-turn, and Kneel- Shoulder Rifle-Return to Stand as intervention outcome, also devised for this study, will be evaluated with pre test to post tests Modified Functional Independence Measure - Motor (MFIM-Motor). These measurements were devised for this study, and will be evaluated for informational purposes only.
