Effect of Footbath on Pain Severity and Sleep Quality

The goal of this clinical trial is to examine the effect of hot water foot bath on the patients' pain severity and sleep quality levels on the night of the lumbar degenerative disc surgery. The main hypotheses are: H1=Pain severity of the patients who applied footbath is lower than the patients who did not. H2=The sleep quality of the patients who applied footbath is higher than the patients who did not. Participants will be asked to keep their feet in 42oC hot water for 20 minutes on the night of the day of surgery. If there is a comparison group: Researchers will compare control group to see if there is any difference on the pain severity and sleep quality of the patients.

Epidural injection will be completed under fluoroscopy and all patients will receive 1-4 mg of Midazolam for relaxation before procedure and, if needed, 50-100 mcg of Fentanyl intravenous (IV). Radiopaque contrast (Omnipaque 300), for confirming the epidural position of the needle, steroids and local anesthetic agents will be used according to the physician performing the block and will not be controlled by the study. Patients will be randomly assigned to receive either inhaled Entonox along with the interventional block they are scheduled for or oxygen. They will be blinded about the treatment they are receiving. Those randomized to Entonox will inhale the gas through a mouthpiece throughout the procedure and also continue to receive it for a total of 4 hours in the recovery. Those randomized to the oxygen group will receive oxygen through a similar mouthpiece for the entire duration of the procedure and recovery for 4 hours. Following completion of procedure the patient will be transferred to recovery and monitored for 3-5 hours then discharged home with instructions. Possible side effects will be monitored and recorded, pain score of patient will be recorded before discharge. All the patients will receive standard instructions regarding physical back exercises. This will be repeated for every procedure up to maximum of three blocks. The patients will be followed during each block and over a period of 1, 3, 6 and 12 months and on each follow-up visit will complete computerized set of questionnaires as they did before the procedure. The patients charts will be then reviewed for one year after the initial procedure to determine if further epidural steroid injections or surgery for the presenting problem were required. It is anticipated that the appropriate number of patients will be enrolled within six months of study initiation.

This study was conducted to determine the effect of progressive relaxation exercises with music therapy on sleep quality and pain severity of patients hospitalized in the surgical departments of a university hospital.This single-blind, pre-test-post-test with control group design quasi-experimental study was carried out between March-July 2019. 31 patients who were hospitalized in surgical departments for at least one week and regularly performed relaxation exercises consisted of experimental group, and 31 patients who were hospitalized for at least one week but did not do relaxation exercises consisted of control group. The study data were collected by using "Descriptive Characteristics Form", pain severity of patients was measured using "Visual Analogue Scale", and sleep quality of patients was measured using "Visual Analogue Sleep Scale". The patients were asked to perform the exercises with music an average of 30 min before sleeping every day for a week. The observation of the nurse working in department and the patient's statement were used for control. The ethical permission and the approval of hospital management were obtained for the study. In the statistical analysis of the data, independent sample t test, one-way anova and paired sample t test were used. Statistical significance level was taken as p<.05.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of Reiki on pain intensity and quality of life in patients receiving hemodialysis treatment. Materials and methods The research was conducted as a qualitative study using pretest-posttest, double-blind, randomized controlled study and semi-structured in-depth interview. In this study, patients receiving HD treatment in three separate private dialysis centers in Turkey were randomized to Reiki and sham Reiki groups. In the first three hours of the HD session, in the first three hours of the HD session, three sessions a week for a total of 12 sessions for 30 minutes (min), the first level is applied to 9 main points (crown, forehead, throat, heart, solar plexus, sacral and root chakras, knees, ankles and feet). While applying Reiki, the sham Reiki group was touched at the same points for the same period of time by the uninitiated practitioner. At the beginning and end of the study, Kidney Disease Quality of Life (KDQOLTM-36) scores, Visual Analogue Scale (VAS-Pain) before and after the application, and psychodynamic reactions experienced during the Reiki application after the application were evaluated. At the end of the research, the Reiki group's opinions about the Reiki experience were collected using a form consisting of semi-structured questions.

The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) and transcutaneous acupoint electrical stimulation (TAES) on pain and analgesic drug consumption in patients who had undergone abdominal surgery with a midline incision. Evidence for the effects of and transcutaneous electrical stimulation on pain and analgesic consumption on patients undergoing abdominal surgery with severe pain experience and high levels of neuroendocrine stress response is uncertain.

Objective Markers of Pain Perception in Pediatric Emergency

Pain is a major problem in the care of children in pediatric emergencies. Indeed, its relief rests on the oral communication of the young patient, who does not always able to it (difficult to verbalize, fear of the hospital, problem mental development ...). There is no way in which pain can be apprehended objectively, immediately and effectively. To advance our knowledge of this problem, several approaches have been studied as from functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), electroencephalography (EEG), or from autonomic parameters. However, all these approaches have their limitations: although fMRI presents interesting performances, it allows only a retrospective analysis, and cannot adapt to the clinical context of the young patient for example. EEG-based approaches and autonomic parameters show interesting results but suffer from perfectible sensitivity to muscle activation for EEG whereas the vegetative parameters to stress. In this context, our working hypothesis considers that the search for markers of painful perception must be based on a neurophysiological approach, based on the combined analysis of the EEG and autonomic responses in real time. The aim of this work is to study (1) the cortical (EEG) and autonomic (cardiovascular, skin, pupillary) responses induced by sutures in children who can communicate their pain according to whether they cause pain or not.

An Evaluation of an SCCD on the Symptomatology of Painful DPN

Painful Diabetic Neuropathy

This is a controlled trial to evaluate the efficacy of an Sequential Contraction Compression Device (SCCD) on the symptomatology of Painful Diabetic Neuropathy. Subjects will be divided into a control group where they will be monitored while continuing with their current treatment regimen and into a treatment group where they will continue with their current regimen and have SCCD therapy added. Subjects will be evaluated for Subjective Pain levels, quality of life, breakthrough drug use, sleep levels, and objectively with a Quantitative Sensory Testing device. The trial duration is 30 days.
