This phase II trial is studying how well giving radiation therapy together with oxaliplatin and fluorouracil followed by gemcitabine works in treating patients with locally advanced, unresectable pancreatic cancer. Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to damage tumor cells. Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as oxaliplatin, fluorouracil, and gemcitabine, work in different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Oxaliplatin may also make the tumor cells more sensitive to radiation therapy. Giving radiation therapy with chemotherapy may kill more tumor cells.

RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as gemcitabine and capecitabine, work in different ways to stop the growth of tumor cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping them from dividing. Bevacizumab may stop the growth of tumor cells by stopping blood flow to the tumor. Giving gemcitabine and capecitabine together with bevacizumab may kill more tumor cells. PURPOSE: This phase II trial is studying how well giving gemcitabine and capecitabine together with bevacizumab works in treating patients with metastatic or unresectable pancreatic cancer.

RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as gemcitabine, use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Celecoxib may stop the growth of pancreatic cancer by stopping blood flow to the tumor and blocking the enzymes necessary for tumor cell growth. Combining gemcitabine with celecoxib may kill more tumor cells. PURPOSE: This phase II trial is studying how well giving gemcitabine together with celecoxib works in treating patients with metastatic pancreatic cancer.

Some block the ability of cancer cells to grow and spread. Others find cancer cells and help kill them or deliver cancer-killing substances to them. It is not yet known whether irofulven is effective in treating pancreatic cancer. PURPOSE: Randomized phase III trial to compare the effectiveness of irofulven with that of fluorouracil in treating patients who have locally advanced or metastatic pancreatic cancer that has not responded to previous treatment with gemcitabine.

Colony-stimulating factors such as filgrastim may increase the number of immune cells found in bone marrow or peripheral blood and may help a person recover from the side effects of chemotherapy. Combining chemotherapy with interferon alfa may kill more tumor cells. PURPOSE: Phase II trial to study the effectiveness of combining chemotherapy and interferon alfa followed by filgrastim in treating patients who have gastrointestinal tract cancer.
