Δ9-THC (Namisol®) in Chronic Pancreatitis Patients Suffering From Persistent Abdominal Pain

Abdominal pain resulting from chronic pancreatitis (CP) is often recurrent, intense and long-lasting, and is extremely difficult to treat. Medical analgesic therapy is considered as first choice in pain management of CP, resulting in regularly prescription of opioids. The adverse consequences of prolonged opioid use, including addiction, tolerance and opioid induced hyperalgesia, call for an alternative medical treatment. Cannabis has been used to treat pain for many centuries. Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC), the psychoactive substance of the cannabis plant, has been shown in previous studies to be a promising analgesic. The development of Namisol®, a tablet containing purified Δ9-THC showing an improved pharmacokinetic profile, provides the opportunity to test the analgesic potential of Δ9-THC in favourable conditions. The current study aims to investigate the analgesic efficacy of Namisol® as add-on analgesic during a long-term treatment (52 days) of abdominal pain resulting from CP.

Secretin Infusion for Pain Due to Chronic Pancreatitis

To determine if intravenous secretin administration in escalating doses three times daily for three days will improve the pain from CP at the time of infusion, after each infusion (1 to 3 hours), at Day 7 after infusion, and at Day 30 after infusion. To validate the safety of intravenous secretin administration at the dosage indicated in this study.

Vitamin D Substitution for Patients With Chronic Pancreatitis and Malabsorption

Purpose: The overall objective of this study is to learn more about the disease chronic pancreatitis and thus contribute to better treatments. The investigators will gain this by studying the effects of vitamin D in the body immune system and bones. The investigators will also study the uptake of vitamin D through the intestine compared with the amount of vitamin D obtained through exposure to UVB rays. The investigators have set a series of questions which the investigators want to answer with this experiment: Do patients with chronic pancreatitis have reduced absorption of vitamin D from the gut? Have the two treatment methods with vitamin D, UV radiation and tablets, the same success rate? Does the distribution of the white blood cells change when the vitamin D level increases and does it depend on whether the patient have UVB radiation or tablet with vitamin D? Will patients require reduced amounts of painkillers when vitamin D level increases? Does vitamin D have influence on blood sugar and thus the risk of diabetes or worsening of this? Could vitamin D affect the blood content of inflammation markers? Does the patient feel better when he takes vitamin D? Does bone strength increase when the patients receive grants of vitamin D?

Efficacy of EUS-guided Celiac Plexus Blockade in Chronic Pancreatitis

This is a triple-blind, parallel group, randomized controlled trial to assess the benefit of triamcinolone injection as a therapeutic measure for control of chronic pancreatitis pain. The treatment group will undergo EUS-CPB with bupivicaine plus triamcinolone ("therapeutic block"). There control group will undergo EUS-CPB with bupivicaine alone ("diagnostic block").

To assess the effect of RG1068 at a dose of 0.2 mcg/kg intravenously (IV) on the diameter of the pancreatic duct when used during Multidetector Computed Tomography (MDCT) of the pancreas. To demonstrate that RG1068-enhanced MDCT improves image quality of the pancreas in patients with chronic pancreatitis. To evaluate if RG1068 enhanced MDCT results in improved delineation of structural abnormalities of the pancreatic duct as compared to non-enhanced MDCT.

Pain and Chronic Pancreatitis - Clinical End Experimental Studies

The aim of the study is to investigate the effect of pregabalin in pain resulting from chronic pancreatitis. The effect will be investigated by means of questionnaires concerning the daily experience of pain and the general quality of life. Furthermore the patients will be invited to participate in experimental testing with a multimodal pain model. The experimental testing will include stimulation of the skin, muscle and visceral tissue. The results from the experimental part of the study may help us to understand the mechanisms of action of pregabalin in this patient population.
