Comparison of the Balance Board and Perceptual Motor Therapy in Children With Cerebral Palsy.

Cerebral Palsy

Various studies have worked on the sitting balance of cerebral palsy (CP) with Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) level I-III with a sample greater than 30, there is no data available to compare the effect of a balance board and perceptual motor therapy to improve sitting in GMFCS level IV and V with a sample greater than 30. This study will add the authenticity to literature with a large sample size and affect the severity of the condition.

Remote Ischemic Conditioning, Bimanual Skill Learning, and Corticospinal Excitability

Unilateral Cerebral PalsyHemiplegic Cerebral Palsy1 more

Unilateral cerebral palsy (UCP) is a leading cause of childhood disability. An early brain injury impairs the upper extremity function, bimanual coordination, and impacts the child's independence. The existing therapeutic interventions have higher training doses and modest effect sizes. Thus, there is a critical need to find an effective priming agent to enhance bimanual skill learning in children with UCP. This study aims to determine the effects of a novel priming agent, remote ischemic conditioning (RIC), when paired with intensive bimanual skill training to enhance bimanual skill learning and to augment skill dependent plasticity in children with UCP.

Short Term Follow-up of a Botulinum Toxin Intervention in Children With Spastic Cerebral Palsy

Spastic Cerebral Palsy

This study investigates the effect of integrated Botulinum Neurotoxin A (BoNT) treatment on morphologic muscle and tendon properties, spasticity, joint stiffness, joint range of motion, muscle strength, gait and gross motor function. The integrated BoNT treatment combines BoNT-injections with serial casting and intensive physical therapy, as previously described by Molenaers et al. The current study will include 30 children who are clinically scheduled for BoNT treatment in the medial gastrocnemius and/or the semitendinosus muscle in the intervention group and 30 children in a control group who will receive usual care within a time span of 3 months.

tDCS and Bimanual Therapy for Children With Hemiplegic Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral PalsyHemiplegic Cerebral Palsy3 more

The goal of this study is to test the efficacy of transcranial direct current stimulation combined with bimanual training on hand function in children with unilateral spastic cerebral palsy (USCP). Children who enroll in the protocol will be randomized to receive either sham (not stimulating) tDCS plus bimanual training, or active (stimulating) tDCS plus bimanual training.

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation for Post-stroke Motor Recovery

StrokeIschemic2 more

This research study is to find out if brain stimulation at different dosage level combined with an efficacy-proven rehabilitation therapy can improve arm function. The stimulation technique is called transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). The treatment uses direct currents to stimulate specific parts of the brain affected by stroke. The adjunctive rehabilitation therapy is called "modified Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy" (mCIMT). During this therapy the subject will wear a mitt on the hand of the arm that was not affected by a stroke and force to use the weak arm. The study will test 3 different doses of brain stimulation in combination with mCIMT to find out the most promising one.
