Effect of Simultaneous Dual Stimulation on Freezing of Gait in Parkinson's Disease

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of dual-mode non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) with high-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) over the primary motor cortex of the lower leg and anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex compared with rTMS alone in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) with freezing of gait (FOG).

Vibrotactile Stimulation in Parkinson's Disease

The purpose of this study is to examine the possibility of a new, non-invasive, non-drug treatment for Parkinson's disease. The treatment involves gentle vibratory stimulation delivered to the fingertips (called 'vibrotactile stimulation'). Along with the treatment, participants will also undergo kinematic testing.

A Phase 3 Study With P2B001 in Subjects With Early Parkinson's

P2B001 is an investigational drug that comprised of low doses of two drugs, pramipexole and rasagiline, which are both approved drugs and routinely used in standard therapy for Parkinson's disease. The two drugs work in two different mechanisms that help each other, so there is a reason to believe that their combined activity will be better than each individual drug, and that lower doses can be used without losing the therapeutic effect. Thus, the development of P2B001 is intended to provide a combination of low doses of these two drugs, in an improved formulation, that is hoped to be more effective in controlling Parkinson's disease symptoms and with less side effects than each of the drugs taken alone or the current available commercial drugs taken together. In a previously completed clinical trial a significant improvement in Parkinson's disease symptoms was seen in patients treated with P2B001 compared to patients that were treated with placebo. In this phase 3 study , the safety and efficacy of P2B001 will be assessed by comparing P2B001 to its individual components pramipexole and rasagiline. This will be done by monitoring the motor and non-motor symptoms, evaluating responses participants provide on questionnaires relating to Parkinson's disease and quality of life that will be completed on every visit. In addition, this study will also compare P2B001 to a marketed drug of pramipexole ER. Approximately 525 patients will participate in this research study and the participation in this study will last between 14 to 18 weeks.

Modafinil for Freezing of Gait (FOG) in Parkinson's Disease (PD)

Freezing of gait is a late stage complication of Parkinson's disease in which patients note that their feet feel stuck or glued to the ground. This can lead to imbalance and falls and the secondary complications that can result from falls such as fractures and hospitalizations. While levodopa can help freezing of gait in some patients, it does not help in all, and the dose needed to treat freezing may be limited by side effects of the medications. Currently there are no treatments targeted towards freezing of gait and the goal of this research is to see if Modafinil could be one such drug to help freezing of gait in Parkinson's disease.

Pilot Study on the Effects of Neuromuscular Taping in Parkinson's Disease Patients

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a degenerative disorder characterized by a symptom triad consisting on: tremor, rigidity and bradykinesia . To these symptoms it is often added postural alteration that can stand in two different attitudes, such as the camptocormia and the syndrome of Pisa . Progressing in its evolution, PD becomes increasingly disabling, making it difficult or even impossible daily activities such as washing or dressing.The abnormal posture, with alteration of the limbs, the neck and trunk, is a recurring feature in PD, with a frequency of about 30%. Between 2% and 12.3% are more severe abnormalities such as camptocormia, the syndrome of Pisa and the anterocollis. Several studies disease plug in Neuromuscular Taping technique (NMT) among rehabilitative tools in degenerative neurological syndromes. To the best of our knowledge, no applications were found in PD. Therefore, the current study was designed to evaluate quantitatively the effects of the NMT intervention on the trunk kinematics during standing position. More specifically, this study aims to compare the trunk kinematic variables of patients with PD who were treated with effective NMT versus those of the subjects who received only the pharmacological treatment.
