Finding the Right Words in Neurogenic Communication Disorders
AnomiaStroke3 moreEvery year thousands of persons suffer from brain damage resulting in anomia, that is, word finding difficulties affecting their ability to talk to other people. Anomia may be a result of stroke or of progressive neurological diseases such as Parkinson's disease or multiple sclerosis (MS). Word retrieval is dependent on a complex system of different neural networks and to name objects and activities can be affected to different degrees. The present project explores different aspects of naming ability in altogether 90 persons that has anomia related to stroke or to Parkinson's disease or MS. Furthermore, the communicative strategies and resources used by conversation partners in everyday conversational interaction and in care situations, affected by anomia are studied. Finally, the project includes a study of the effectiveness of a word finding training program based on stimulation of semantic and phonological networks in the brain, involved in the production of words. There is a lack of research on effects on communication from anomia in Parkinson's disease and MS and there is no research on anomia that investigates both object and action naming using a material adapted to the Swedish language. In the project quantitative and qualitative methods are used to explore and describe how persons with different neurogenic communication disorders can use different resources and communicative strategies to express themselves.
A Study of Tolerability and Efficacy of Cannabidiol on Motor Symptoms in Parkinson's Disease
Parkinson DiseaseThe major purpose of this study is to assess the efficacy of CBD on motor symptoms of Parkinson's Disease (PD), and secondarily to study the safety and tolerability of CBD and other efficacy, particularly regarding tremor in PD. The study has been powered to detect a clinically significant reduction in Movement Disorder Society (MDS) Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) Part III motor scores. This is a 1:1 parallel, double-blind, randomized controlled trial (RCT) with 60 participants. The investigators will be recruiting up to 75 participants; the goal is to have 60 participants (30 in CBD group and 30 in placebo group) complete the study. The study drug is obtained from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA).

Dopaminergic Modulation of Declarative Memory
Parkinson's DiseaseThe study investigates the effect of dopaminergic stimulation over declarative memory functions in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. At this aim, 20 PD patients will receive declarative memory tasks in two different conditions: after 12-18 hours of dopaminergic stimulation withdrawal ("off" condition) and after the first daily dose dopaminergic therapy ("on" condition). 20 healthy controls will also administered the two tasks in two conditions with the same inter-session delay as PD patients, but without taking drugs.
Behavioral or Solifenacin Therapy for Urinary Symptoms in Parkinson Disease
Overactive BladderParkinson DiseaseThe impact of urinary symptoms in Parkinson disease (PD) extends beyond worsened well-being. Urinary symptoms common in PD, especially incontinence and nocturia, are major risk factors for falls likely due to the combination of urinary urgency and impaired mobility (and falls are a leading cause of mortality in PD), for spouse/caregiver stress due to decreased mutuality in the relationship, and for institutionalization, largely due to increased disability. Additionally, most medications currently recommended for urinary symptoms in PD are anticholinergic and have the potential to worsen the progressive cognitive and autonomic burdens of the disease. Veterans with PD are also more likely to rely solely on VA for their health care than Veterans without PD. Thus, optimizing the care of urinary symptoms for Veterans with PD becomes imperative, particularly for VA. Using a non-inferiority design, this proposal seeks to demonstrate the comparative effectiveness of pelvic floor muscle exercise-based behavioral therapy versus drug therapy to treat urinary symptoms in PD.

Parkinson's DiseaseConstipationThis is a Phase 1/2a study to assess the safety, tolerability, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics of an orally-administered medication to relieve symptoms of constipation associated with Parkinson's Disease. Ten patients will be enrolled in Phase 1, and will be studied over an 8-12 week period. Forty patients will be enrolled in Phase 2, and will be studied over an 8-10 week period. All subjects will receive the study drug during one of the observational periods of the study.
