Classical Guitar for Parkinson's Disease
Parkinson DiseaseThe purpose of this study is to understand if training Parkinson's disease patients in classical guitar will improve motor function, mood, and quality of life. While medication has been found to be effective for many Parkinson's disease patients, many patients still have symptoms. Previous studies have found that music and rhythm-based activities can help Parkinson's disease symptoms. A previous study looked at the effect of playing classical guitar on Parkinson's disease symptoms. They found positive changes in Parkinson's disease symptoms that lasted for 6 weeks after the study ended. Further, there were positive changes in depression, anxiety, and quality of life.
Cognitive, Affective, and Motor Effects of Tangotherapy in Parkinson's Disease
Parkinson DiseaseNeuroscientific research has shown a close relationship between physical fitness and cognition, showing a positive effect of physical activity (e.g., aerobic activity) on the maintenance of psycho-cognitive well-being in the elderly. In particular, dancing seems to be very effective, as it involves both motor and multisensory aspects (touch, sight, hearing, proprioception), stimulating memory, motor learning and social interaction. In fact, dance increases sensory-motor skills and cognitive performance in the neurologically healthy elderly. Dance-based therapeutic approaches, in particular Argentine tango, have also been implemented in the context of neurodegenerative pathologies, including Parkinson's disease (PD) where motor (i.e., tremors, postural instability, motor slowdown) and cognitive difficulties (e.g., executive deficits) may coexist. Most of these studies have so far demonstrated a significant improvement in balance and a reduction in motor symptoms, while evidence regarding cognitive and emotional benefits brought about by dance remains limited. When investigated, cognitive benefits have often been evaluated at the level of global cognition (i.e., screening tests), without a detailed characterization of the effects of tango on cognitive and affective functioning (e.g., executive functions, social cognition, depressive symptoms), central aspects in Parkinson's disease.
Rock Steady Boxing: A Community Based In Person Class
Parkinson DiseaseThe purpose of this study is to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of a non-contact Rock Steady Boxing class delivered to participants with Parkinson's Disease via an in-person community-based program. The study will also assess the overall feasibility of integrating an in-person community program within a neuromuscular course in a Doctor of Physical Therapy program. Specific Aim: To examine the effects of an in-person community-based Rock Steady Boxing class on the functional mobility, functional endurance, cardiovascular capacity, visual-motor reaction times, quality of life, mood/affect and overall physical activity completion and fear of falling on individuals with Parkinson's Disease.
Learning Potential of Patients With Parkinson's Disease After Two Weeks of Targeted Touchscreen...
Parkinson DiseaseParkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by severe motor and non-motor symptoms, including upper limb dysfunction. Due to the degradation of dopaminergic neurons in the striatum, PD patients experience difficulties with motor learning and more specifically with the consolidation of motor memory. Recent work showed that intensive writing training improved writing skills in PD. Although consolidation effects were present, difficulties with retention were also still apparent. Besides impacting writing, manual dexterity deficits in PD can also affect the use of touchscreens. Researchers from our lab demonstrated that impairments were most pronounced in multi-direction sliding motions, indicating the need for training of these motor skills. Our lab demonstrated the classic difficulties with retention in PD after one session of training of a swipe and slide pattern on a tablet (SSP-task) as single task (ST), although immediate gains were demonstrated. Therefore, in this study the investigators will examine whether a two-week home-based training program of a tablet-based SSP-training program will lead to immediate and consolidated improvements that are retained in time. This program will combine ST and dual task (DT) training to provide variation during the training period, but also to increase the cognitive challenge during learning, thereby stimulation consolidation of learning. The primary aim of this study consists of investigating the learning effects after two weeks of targeted touchscreen training. Secondary, the investigators will examine whether these effects will also be retained after four weeks without practice and whether targeted training results in consolidated improvements, in terms of automaticity and transfer towards an untrained task. Given the objective recording of compliance to the training protocol, the investigators will explore the association between compliance rates and learning effects.

A certain degree of degeneration of digestive system function can cause PD patients to constipation symptoms. Studies have shown that up to 63 percent of people with Parkinson's disease experience constipation. What is more, medications for PD, including levodopa and dopamine agonist, can also cause constipation. In recent years, an increasing number of studies have been conducted to investigate gut microflora and their influence on the central nervous system. Furthermore, some studies of Parkinson's disease have confirmed that gut microflora plays a vital role in the occurrence and development of Parkinson's disease. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of fecal microbiota transplantation in the treatment of constipation symptoms in patients with Parkinson's disease receiving a steady dose of levodopa. We will also analyze intestinal flora diversity in patients with Parkinson's disease with constipation. The investigation of the gut microbiome may emerge as a new therapeutic measure to treat constipation associate with Parkinson's disease.

The effect of therapeutic and non-therapeutic stimulation settings will be assessed. Additionally, DBS effects in the presence and absence of anti-PD medication will be studied. Also of interest are differences in stimulation effects while at rest versus while performing a task.

Effect of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine on Constipation in Parkinson's Disease
Parkinson's DiseaseConstipationThe aim of this pilot study is to investigate the effect of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) in decreasing constipation symptoms in people with Parkinson's disease (PD). A second but optional aim is to determine if OMM changes the bacterial flora of the mouth and gut. OMM is a safe and gentle manual treatment provided by osteopathic physicians. All participants will receive OMM during the second half of the eleven week trial.
Establishment of Clinical Basis for Hematopoietic Growth Factors Therapy in Brain Injury

To be specific, our clinical study is expected that the combination injection of EPO and G-CSF shows neurotrophic and neuroprotective effects by facilitating endogenous repair process in patients with neurological diseases including stroke, cerebral palsy, or atypical parkinsonism. Therefore, we will apply our original treatment technique in patients with neurological diseases, which is expected to overcome current ethical and technical limitations of less evidenced functional recovery, hematological changes, and side effects. Eventually, We will establish a comprehensive clinical background about neurotrophic and neuroprotective effects of this hematopoietic growth factors therapy.
