Effects of Peripheral Electrical Stimulation With Focused Ultrasound on Motor Symptoms in Parkinson's...

Parkinson Disease

Transcranial Ultrasound Stimulation (TUS) is an emerging non-invasive brain stimulation(NIBS) technique that can be used on both superficial and deep brain targets with a high spatial resolution as small as a few cubic millimeters. Functional Electrical stimulation is a peripheral stimulation technique researched and clinically used to restore motor function following conditions like stroke and Spinal cord injury. To date, there are no studies that have looked at the neuro modulatory effects of combining TUS and FES on motor symptoms in patients with Parkinson's disease. The current study aims to understand the neuromodulatory effects of combining tbFUS to bilateral primary motor cortex (M1) in Parkinsons's disease patients immediately followed by bilateral upper extremity FES of the hand muscles for improving motor symptoms.

EMPOWER PD - Feasibility of an Interdisciplinary Clinic for People With Parkinson's Disease

Parkinson Disease

This study is a nonrandomized, pilot study of an interdisciplinary, patient-centric model of health care delivery in a "boot camp" style structured clinic for people diagnosed with Parkinson's disease (PwPD). 20 participants will attend a three session EMPOWER PD clinic and a two month follow up interview. The primary objective is to assess feasibility and acceptability of the newly developed clinic intervention as well as individual perception of experience and barriers.

SPEECH as Biomarker for Emotion, Movement and cOgnition in Parkinson's Disease

Parkinson Disease

With this study, the investigators want to investigate whether computerized speech analysis can be used to reliably and objectively detect motor, emotional, and cognitive fluctuations in Parkinson's disease patients.

Neurophysiology Biomarkers of Cognitive Impairment Associated With Deep Brain Stimulation

Parkinson Disease

The study aims to investigate cognitive impairment associated with Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) in Parkinson's Disease patients, with a focus on identifying neurophysiology biomarkers of DBS associated cognitive changes. Using neurophysiology data recorded during DBS surgeries and post-implantation, the research intends to identify biomarkers in order to optimize electrode placement, enhance programming, and ultimately minimize DBS-related cognitive side effects.

Exploratory Study of the Expression of the Serotonergic 5-HT4 Receptor in Parkinson's Disease

Parkinson Disease

The research aim to study in detail the motor, cognitive and affective modifications of Parkinsonian patients (compared to control subjects) at a moderate stage of the disease and to analyze by positron emission tomography (PET) imaging with the specific radioligand [11C]SB207145 the expression levels of this 5-HT4 receptor. At the same time, the study will monitor the impact of the 5-HTTLPR polymorphisms of Serotonin Transporter (SERT) and Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) Val66Met on the expression of the 5-HT4 receptor in subjects.

The Impact of Exercise on Subthalamic Nucleus Neural Activity in Parkinson's Disease

Parkinson DiseaseDeep Brain Stimulation

Fifteen PwPD who have undergone DBS surgery and utilize the Percept system will complete a FE and VE exercise session on a stationary cycle while Off antiparkinsonian medication. Bilateral neural activity of the STN will be continuously recorded for 130 minutes (pre-, during FE or VE and post-exercise). The Movement Disorders Society Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS) III Motor Exam and upper extremity force-tracking task will be used to determine motor response to exercise.

Telemedicine Intervention in Patients With Chronic Pain in PD

Parkinson's Disease

Pain is a very common and disabling symptom in Parkinson's disease, yet it is often untreated. This study will assess the impact of home-based physical and cognitive exercise interventions to reduce pain in this disease. This approach would offer an easily implemented and affordable way to encourage and maintain use of these interventions by patients virtually indefinitely through remote access technology. The study findings may help VA clinicians provide optimal care for the many Veterans with Parkinson's disease and chronic pain.

Development of a Proactive Health Care Pathway When Initiating Continuous Subcutaneous Apomorphine...

Parkinson Disease

Continuous subcutaneous apomorphine infusion (CSAI) has proven to be effective in advaced Parkinson's disease patients with motor fluctuations not controlled by oral or transdermal medication. After initiation of this therapy, most of the patients need nurse services at home for the entire duration of treatment. Some patients are reluctant about this dependence and thus may refuse or delay the initiation of CSAI. To date, there is no guideline to promote patients' autonomy in managing CSAI treatment. Thus we developed a program focusing on early autonomy during CSAI intitiation, through empowering the patient or their carer, and promoting primary and tertiary care. The hypothesis is that implementing the program will lead patients to autonomy. This will have beneficial effects on clinical and heath-related outcomes and may be cost-effective.

Proof of Mechanism Study to Evaluate Binding of Alfa-synuclein

Parkinson DiseaseMultisystem Atrophy1 more

The overall goal of this protocol is to: Evaluate [18F]UCB-2897 as an α-synuclein targeted radiopharmaceutical. The primary objective is: • Confirm a specific α -synuclein signal with [18F]UCB-2897 in participants with PD and/or MSA relative to healthy volunteers Secondary and exploratory objectives are: Determine the safety and tolerability of microdose [18F]UCB-2897 Evaluate preliminary dosimetry of [18F]UCB-2897 Additional exploratory objectives are: Determine the pharmacokinetics / metabolism of [18F]UCB-2897 Determine the optimal imaging protocol for [18F]UCB-2897
