Definition: the overall objective is to examine childhood obesity with focus on NAFLD and its treatment. Further, we aimed to investigate the impact of genetic variation on obesity. The specific aims are to; describe the degree of NAFLD among overweight and obese, Danish children. (hypothesis; the degree for pediatric NAFLD among Danish Children was equal that found in other Caucasian paediatric study populations). investigate the effect of a multidisciplinary intervention treatment of 1 year on liver fat content. (hypothesis; the intervention could reduce the liver fat percentage and a reduction in BMI SDS would associate with a reduction in liver fat content) - Analyze changes in liver fat content in relation to changes in levels of fasting blood variables to see if any of them could be used as a clinical tool for monitoring hepatic steatosis in the clinic. (hypothesis; serum aminotransferases (separately and their ratio, respectively), serum insulin, and HOMA-IR could predict improvement in liver fat content - Investigate the association between genetic variants and obesity.

Prevalence rates of childhood obesity have reached alarming levels. As childhood obesity may already be associated with serious comorbidities, obese adolescents are at significantly higher risk for obesity and increased morbidity and mortality during adulthood. Combined lifestyle interventions, which include regular physical activity and dietary restriction, have been shown to result in most significant improvements in cardiovascular function and their associated factors in the pediatric and adolescent population with obesity. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of a combined exercise and diet intervention on cardiovascular function and their associated factors in obese children.

Project TEACH: The Eating, Affect, and Cognitive Health Study

Specific aims are to: Assess variability in performance on state-level measures of working memory (WM) delivered via Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA). The investigators expect WM performance to vary over the course of a day across participants, and to be poorer and more variable among youth with overweight/obesity and loss of control (LOC) eating relative to overweight/obese and non-overweight controls. Investigate the relationship between state WM and eating behavior. The investigators expect that poorer momentary WM will predict an increased likelihood of LOC eating as assessed via EMA, and greater energy intake and poorer dietary quality as assessed via dietary recall, across participants. The investigators expect these effects to be strongest among youth with concomitant overweight/obesity and LOC eating.

Obesity in Pediatric Sickle Cell Disease: A New Phenomenon

The objective of this project is to determine the prevalence of hypertension, hyperlipidemia and hyperglycemia in the pediatric population with sickle cell disease who are obese in Mississippi compared to those pediatric patients with sickle cell disease who are not overweight/obese. The pediatric hematology department at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) has a relatively large population of patients with sickle cell disease who are overweight and obese. This is a paradoxical trend since high-energy expenditure of the body to produce new red blood cells usually results in underweight to normal weight patients. From our previous chart review, the investigators found our pediatric patients with sickle cell disease to have similar rates of overweight and obesity to that of state and national levels. The metrics our team will measure include: blood pressure, blood cholesterol levels and blood glucose levels. The investigators expect to find higher rates of hypertension, high cholesterol and high glucose levels in the overweight and obese patients with SCD compared to that of underweight and normal weight. Our ultimate goal for follow up projects will be to determine the baseline risk of hypertension, hyperlipidemia and hyperglycemia in this population so we can then determine effective, sustainable interventions for weight and the co-morbidities that come with increasing weight status. Our goal would also be to educate the patient and families on these interventions and provide them with resources, which could lead to an overall improvement in health and patients quality of life.

The aim of the present project will be to better identify the independent role played by both the metabolic and mechanical load and their modification during weight loss, on the energy expenditure and energy metabolism of adolescents with obesity.

According to statistics from the European Association for the Study of Obesity (EASO), taking into account the definition of overweight and obesity recommended by the International Obesity Task Fort (IOTF), the prevalence of overweight (including obesity) in European children aged 7 to 17 years is 16-22% and the prevalence of obesity is 4-6%. Some review studies3 and meta-analysis4,5 have reported an inverse relationship between dairy products consumption and the prevalence or incidence of overweight and obesity. However, some methodological issues arise from these analyses. For instance, the combination of studies with different exposures (e.g. full fat milk, total milk) in the total dairy product analysis. Moreover, since the publication of the lasts meta-analysis in 2016, new epidemiological studies evaluating the association between dairy product consumption and overweight or obesity risk have been published. Objective The aim of this work is to systematically review and assess the associations between total dairy consumption and its different subtypes with the prevalence and incidence of overweight and obesity in children and adolescents.
