The first step in the management of periodontal disease involves the non-surgical removal of the soft and hard bacterial deposits at all supra- and sub-gingival sites, especially into deep pockets, which can be carried on with different instruments. Unfortunately it seems that, after the initial therapy, many patients still present with active pockets (residual pockets) requiring further treatment and posing a risk of disease progression. This might be due to limitations of the instruments applied and patient-related factors. Air-polishing with low-abrasiveness powders seems to be very effective in the removal of supra- and sub-gingival biofilm and could provide additional benefits during the treatment of pockets. The aim of this randomized, controlled, split-mouth study was to compare the efficacy of full-mouth air-polishing followed by ultrasonic debridement (GBT) versus traditional Scaling and Root Planing (SRP), in terms of pocket closure in patients with stage III-IV periodontitis. To test this hypothesis, the mouth of each patients, upon initial evaluation, were divided in 2 parts: The control group undergoing a standard procedure: ultrasonic debridement with an ultrasonic scaler for remove supra and sub gingival calculus, manual debridement with curettes at deep pathological pockets (PPD > 4mm) and rubber cup with polishing to remove supra gingival biofilm and plaque. The study group undergoing the innovative air polishing procedure: airflow with erythritol powder to remove supra and sub gingival biofilm and plaque, perioflow at deep pathological pockets (PPD > 4mm) and ultrasonic debridement with an ultrasonic scaler for remove supra and sub gingival calculus. The prevalence of residual pockets will be evaluated at 6 weeks and 3 months after the initial therapy and compared between the two groups.

Clinically, the gingival retraction dentistry itself has found wide uses. It has achieved the use of subgingival and gingival crowns in fixed prostheses, cervical abrasion in restorative dentistry, management of root caries and root sensitivity, and recently in the use of appropriate measurements to improve the marginal fit of implant prostheses.There are three different retraction procedures described in the literature: mechanical, mechanical-chemical (chemically impregnated cords or matrix in injectable form) and surgery (electrosurgical, laser, cauterization, etc.)The mechanical method of retraction cords is not always suitable for patients' existing pocket depth, the necessity of using different combinations in shallow or deep pockets, the potential for limited bleeding control in chemically impregnated cords and the toxicity values in those who interact with chemical have led researchers to search for alternative methods. Especially inflammed gingiva is very sensitive to mechanical and chemical trauma. Studies have reported that gingival inflammation, pain, pocket formation, gingival withdrawal, increased bleeding and wound contamination occurred following retraction cord application. However, it is a known fact that the impression material is distorted or the accuracy of the measurement is decreased with the measurements taken without retraction. Nowadays, CAD / CAM (computer-aided design / computer-aided manufacturing) devices, which are designed to overcome these problems and eliminate the errors related to the measurement material, are the first step to be taken with a clear measure.Gingival retraction is recommended to improve the success of scanners in all restorations performed at the gingival or subgingival endpoint. Therefore, in our study, crown restorations will be produced from hybrid blocks by means of CAD / CAM device in order to evaluate the interaction of gingival health with hybrid blocks and to provide the latest technology and standardization.

The Effectiveness of an Oral Health Education Programme of Adolescents in Hong Kong

This project aims to evaluate the relative efficacy of a peer-led intervention based on the Social Cognitive Theory and Health Belief Model versus the control (only pamphlet delivery) on increasing the prevalence of healthy oral behaviors and oral health status among adolescents in Hong Kong. A two-arm non-blinded randomized controlled trial will be conducted among random samples of adolescents enrolling in secondary schools in Hong Kong. In addition to a baseline survey, two follow-up evaluative surveys will be conducted at months 6 and 12. Survey questionnaires will be conducted to participants at three time points (baseline, 6-, 12-month follow-up). Dental check-up examinations will be evaluated at two time points (baseline, 6-month follow-up). Repeated measures will be used to record participants' background, oral behaviors, theory based cognition, and potential confounders. Validated scales will be used. DMFT, plaque index and CPI index will be used to assess the oral health status of participants.

The treatment of otolaryngology (OLR) cancer is based on surgery, radiation, sometimes used in combination with chemotherapy. Patients treated with radiotherapy have multiple oral diseases: mucositis, hyposalivation, tissue fibrosis, exacerbation of periodontitis. Over 70% of patients with head and neck cancers treated with radiotherapy have a lower level of dental clinical attachment and 92% have loose teeth or missing. The management of these oral complications is a priority in OLR oncology. The aim is to improve the oral health of patients to achieve a comfortable life acceptable and necessary for healing. This project proposes to deepen the investigation with two main objectives: To study in vivo the effect of radiation treatment on the evolution of the viral flora of the periodontium in a cohort of patients and matched controls. To study in vitro the effects of irradiation on the replication EBV (herpesvirus) in producing websites lymphoepithelial tonsillar, and atypical dendritic cells associated with EBV that existence were recently discovered.

The investigators hope that by introducing a powered toothbrush with functions that make it possible to remind and gather information about the use, the investigators will primarily facilitate oral care for this group, and are proposing that this will lead to higher quality of life of the persons involved.
