Mapping Aspects of Psychotherapy in Dialectical Behavior Therapy

Borderline Personality Disorder

Although dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) skills training is effective in the treatment of borderline personality disorder, it contains four skills modules and there is little research to guide their modular application. This study compares the unique effects of two distinct DBT skills training modules, relative to a non-DBT therapy group for adults with borderline personality disorder. Using innovative laboratory-based assessment methods, the proposed study will examine the effects of these conditions on emotional responding and interpersonal functioning, as well as clinical outcomes.

Youth to Text or Telehealth for Engagement in HIV Care

HIV/AIDSMental Health Issue (E.G.6 more

Youth To Text or Telehealth for Engagement in HIV Care (Y2TEC) is a randomized control pilot to assess the feasibility and acceptability of delivering a targeted problem-solving intervention to youth ages 18-29 living with HIV (YLWH) for improving HIV care engagement, mental health, and decreasing substance use. The intervention will be delivered to participants in two condition groups in remote telehealth sessions delivered via video-conference over 4 months. Participation in the study will last about 8 months. The investigators hypothesize that the Y2TEC intervention will be feasible and acceptable for YLWH, and will result in improved HIV clinical outcomes. If feasible and acceptable, it can be scaled up for a multi-site randomized clinical trial and ultimately offered in the clinical care of YLWH.

Acetaminophen and Social Processes

Borderline Personality Disorder

Recent research has identified heightened sensitivity to social rejection as a core feature of BPD. Rejection sensitivity can trigger the aggressive, impulsive, and self-injurious behaviors characteristic of the disorder. Therefore targeting therapy towards the reduction of rejection sensitivity may improve the low rates of effectiveness of current pharmacological and behavioral therapies. Therefore, this proposal tests a theoretically-based pharmacological approach that specifically targets the heightened sensitivity to rejection experienced by BPD patients. In prior research with normal controls, it was shown that chronic treatment with the physical pain-killer acetaminophen (e.g. Tylenol) reduced both neural responses to social rejection (using fMRI) as well as self-reported feelings of rejection in a daily diary study. It is the aim of this research project to determine if the over-the-counter analgesic, acetaminophen (active ingredient in Tylenol), can reduce symptoms and behaviors in BPD patients. The goal of this proposal is to use an open-label design to determine if acetaminophen improves symptoms in BPD patients.

"The Effects of Oxytocin on Patients With Borderline Personality Disorder"

Effects of Oxytocin on Borderline Personality DisorderBorderline Personality Disorder

RCT. Two substudies (clinical and experimental). Main objective of the trial is to examine if oxytocin, compared to placebo shows any additional effect on the therapy achievements (outcome) of patients with borderline personality disorder, who receive an in-patient standard psychotherapy (Dialectical-behavioral-therapy, Marsha Linehan (2006)). Secondary objectives : Investigate if oxytocin compared to placebo enhances social trust and emotion recognition in patients with borderline personality disorder. The investigators anticipate a significant reduction in symptoms severity at the end of the treatment compared to study entry.

Short- and Long-term Group Psychotherapy

Mood DisordersAnxiety Disorders1 more

A primary goal of this study is to investigate the significance of treatment duration, by comparing change after group psychotherapy of varying lengths. A secondary goal is to investigate the predictive value of selected patient variables on outcome: personality pathology, quality of object relations, presence of personality disorder, degree of initial disturbance, and education. One hundred and twenty patients from 5-6 different study sites (consisting of one coordinator and 3 therapists) will be included. Exclusion criteria are psychosis, substance abuse, and organically based symptoms. Patients are interviewed before treatment and one year after termination, and self-rated outcome measures are filled in at 3-month intervals during treatment and at termination. After an initial evaluation, patients are randomized to one of two manualized psychodynamic group psychotherapies with different treatment lengths (20 and 80 sessions). Each therapist will conduct both a short- and a long-term group, and sessions are taped in order to check treatment integrity.
