Streptococcus Pyogenes InfectionPharyngitis1 moreThe Checkable Medical At-Home Strep A Test is a rapid chromatographic immunoassay for the qualitative detection of Group A Strep (GAS) antigens from throat swabs. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the clinical performance of the investigational device (i.e., sensitivity, specificity, NPV and PPV) when used by untrained lay persons to detect the presence of Group A Streptococcal antigens in throat swab specimens from individuals five years of age and older with signs and symptoms of pharyngitis, such as fever and sore throat.
Incidence of Group A Strep Pharyngitis in School Children in Fiji
Streptococcus Group AThe purpose of this study is to find out how often group A Streptococcus (GAS) occurs in school-age children of Central Fiji. This bacterium often causes pharyngitis (sore throat) and can also cause pyoderma (skin infection) or scabies. Approximately 1000 children ages 5-14 years will be enrolled from 4 primary schools in Central Fiji. These children will have throat swabs performed to determine how commonly GAS occurs. Over the next 10 months, children in this group who complain of sore throat will be examined and have throat swabs to determine if GAS is the cause. A subset of 600 children will be examined for pyoderma and scabies and have throat swabs every 2 months during the 10 month study. In addition, a small amount of blood will be drawn at 0, 6, and 10 months to determine the level of antibodies to Streptococcus.

Pilot Study of Strepic® Device for the Diagnosis of Group A Streptococcal Pharyngitis
Group A Streptococcal InfectionThe objective of this pilot study is to acquire images using the Strepic® device, a clinical prototype that has been designed specifically as a viable, low-cost, commercially realizable autofluorescence-based diagnostic test, using (1) fluorescence and (2) white light image data, as well as other clinical data points. By acquiring and analyzing the images of pharyngeal bacterial fluorescence and white light patterns in patients with Group A Streptococcus (GAS)-associated pharyngitis and comparing them with those observed in non-GAS pharyngitis, it is believed an algorithm can be developed such that the device will improve the ability of clinicians to quickly and accurately identify GAS infections.

PharyngitisGroup A streptococcal (GAS) pharyngitis in children represents a frequent diagnostic challenge in pediatric emergency departments, since isolated signs and clinical prediction rules are insufficient to accurately discriminate between GAS and non GAS infections. Rapid antigen detection tests (RADTs) therefore remain essential, simple and rapid tools, allowing for rapid GAS identification and prompt antibiotic prescription. However, their sensitivity is not optimal. The aim of the present study is to test the accuracy of a new fluorescent immunoassay (Sofia Strep A FIA) using the optical technology for GAS detection in children 3-15 years old with pharyngitis, compared to a standard RADT, using throat culture as the gold standard (or PCR for discrepant results, i.e. negative culture with any positive RADT).
