GingivitisDental PlaqueThis study aims to evaluate the effect of novel mouthrinse formulations containing bamboo salt, magnolia bark and centella asiatica extracts on gingivitis and dental plaque. Participants uses mouthrinses which contain bamboo salt, magnolia bark and centella asiatica extracts and the same participants will also use placebo for tooth brushing by cross-over design.
Ability of Four Toothpastes to Remove Plaque
Dental PlaqueThe aim of this study is to evaluate and compare the plaque removal efficacy of four experimental toothpastes following a single timed brushing. Prior to each treatment visit, participants will abstain from oral hygiene for a period of 24 hours (+6hrs, -2hrs), immediately preceding a pre-brushing dental plaque evaluation. Participants will then brush once under supervision for one timed minute with each dentifrice after which re-disclosing and a post-brushing plaque assessment will be carried out.

Dental PlaqueTooth DiscolorationIn today's society cosmetic dentistry plays an important role in social relationships and in important aspects of life such as job applications and recruitment processes. Currently, the only available treatment option for patients suffering from black dental pigmentation of bacterial origin is repetitive professional dental cleanings every two or three months, which involve a significant financial outlay, and have been found to be psychologically detrimental due to the lack of a perceived cure. These pigmentations are of unknown etiology, although there has been reported the presence of black-pigment producing bacteria, such as Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythia and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans in such black plaque. These bacteria are found in a group known as periodontopathogens, bacteria responsible for the appearance of periodontitis, an oral chronic disease with high prevalence. In this context, photodynamic therapy, which uses the application of diode light with a wavelength between 400-500 nm for the elimination of periodontal pathogenic bacteria, has demonstrated effectiveness and absence of adverse effects on the management of patients with periodontitis. The proposed study seeks to evaluate the effect of photodynamic therapy on teeth with extrinsic black pigment, in order achieve an eradication of the stains. The investigators will also proceed to analyze in depth the bacterial composition of these stains before the application of photodynamic therapy, in order to stablish the aetiological agents of this black plaque.

Regular Antibacterial Photodynamic Therapy on Oral Hygiene in Elderly Residents
Dental PlaquePus Collection3 moreAround 40 people will participate in the study. The study participants will be recruited from service homes in the City of Helsinki. The subjects will be randomized into two groups. One of the groups will receive daily photodynamic Lumoral treatment for 2 months in a home care unit according to a separate instruction manual. At the beginning of the study, all subjects will receive an oral cleaning and will also be provided with electric toothbrushes. In addition, residents and care home personnel will be instructed on daily tooth cleaning. During the study, all participants will undergo clinical measurements and an assessment of the oral inflammatory load. The samples will be stored for later analysis. In addition, residents or care home personnel answer questions about oral self-care. These measurements and examinations will be carried out at the start of the study and two months after the start of the study. After the end of the study, participants will continue to be treated according to their usual care and individual care plan.

Comparison of Swabs and Toothbrushes in Cleaning the Teeth of Mechanically Ventilated Patients
Dental PlaqueGingivitisCleaning the mouth is difficult in critically ill patients who require support from a breathing machine (ventilator). This is because the plastic (endotracheal) tube which is a necessary interface between patient and ventilator impedes cleaning. New evidence suggests that poor oral health may be linked to ventilator associated pneumonia. Throughout the world both toothbrushes and foam swabs are used to clean the teeth and remove dental plaque, however it is unknown if one method is more effective than the other. The purpose of this study is to establish which (if any) method is most effective at removing plaque in this population of patients.
