RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop cancer cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Oblimersen may increase the effectiveness of dexamethasone by making cancer cells more sensitive to the drug. It is not yet known if dexamethasone is more effective with or without oblimersen in treating multiple myeloma. PURPOSE: Randomized phase III trial to compare the effectiveness of dexamethasone with or without oblimersen in treating patients who have relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma.

RATIONALE: Giving chemotherapy and total-body irradiation before a donor bone marrow transplant helps stop the growth of cancer cells. It also helps stop the patient's immune system from rejecting the donor's stem cells. When the stem cells from a related or unrelated donor, that closely matches the patient's blood, are infused into the patient they may help the patient's bone marrow to make stem cells, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. PURPOSE: This phase II trial is studying how well donor bone marrow transplant works in treating patients with leukemia, lymphoma, or nonmalignant hematologic disorders.

It is not yet known whether dexamethasone is more effective with or without lenalidomide in treating multiple myeloma. PURPOSE: This randomized phase III trial is studying dexamethasone and lenalidomide to see how well they work compared to dexamethasone alone in treating patients with previously untreated stage I, stage II, or stage III multiple myeloma.

Combining chemotherapy with autologous stem cell transplantation or autologous bone marrow transplantation may allow the doctor to give higher doses of chemotherapy drugs and kill more cancer cells. PURPOSE: This phase II trial is studying how well eight different high-dose chemotherapy regimens with or without total-body irradiation followed by autologous stem cell transplantation or autologous bone marrow transplantation works in treating patients with hematologic malignancies or solid tumors.

The purpose of this study in patients needing treatment for AL amyloidosis is to see how well treatment with IV melphalan works and then, if some clonal plasma cells are still present about 2 to 3 months after melphalan treatment, to see how well treatment with bortezomib and dexamethasone works to reduce the rest of the clonal plasma cell disease.
