Safety and Immunogenicity of a Klebsiella Pneumoniae Tetravalent Bioconjugate Vaccine (Kleb4V)

Klebsiella Pneumoniae Infection

In this study, the tetravalent bioconjugate candidate vaccine Kleb4V will be tested to obtain first-time-in-human (FTIH) data on its safety and immunogenicity in healthy adults.

Effect of Statin Therapy on Mortality in Patients With Ventilator Associated Pneumonia

VAP - Ventilator Associated Pneumonia

Statins with their powerful anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and antioxidant properties make them candidate members to be used in the management of sepsis and different types of infections including pneumonia. This study aims to determine whether adjunctive statin therapy decreased day- 28 mortality among ICU patients with ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) & number of ventilator-free days (after successful weaning) between day 1 and both day 28.

Reducing Cost of Azythromycin by Transferring From IV to Oral Therapy

Pneumonia

Intravenous Azythromycin therapy is considerably more expensive than oral therapy. The investigators believe that intravenous therapy is prolonged more that necessary and that oral therapy can be used much earlier in the course of the disease. The investigators plan to check if that statement is true and intervene in order to shorten the intravenous therapy.

Efficacy Study of a Novel Device to Clean the Endotracheal Tube

Endotracheal ExtubationAirway Obstruction4 more

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the in-vivo efficacy of a novel device (endOclear) for cleaning the endotracheal tube (ETT) lumen from secretions. The investigators hypothesize that a protocol of routine ETT cleaning with endOclear may increase the ETT luminal volume measured at extubation compared to the current standard of care. The device may therefore be clinically useful by better maintaining the ETT original function.

Effect of Curcumin on Lung Inflammation

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and lung cancer are leading causes of death and health care use. Diffuse airways inflammation is seen in COPD and is thought to be the reason for deterioration of lung function in COPD. Currently there is no medication available that can modify or reduce this inflammation. Furthermore, from literature review it has been shown that chronic inflammation can result in cancerous changes. Curcumin is a food additive used for centuries. Several studies showed that curcumin suppress the different inflammatory pathways. Specially, the TNF-alpha and the NF kappa-b are down regulated by this substance. This study was designed to evaluate effect of combination of curcumin+Bioprine on sputum cytology in patients with COPD. This is double-blind randomized pilot study.

Dose-Finding Study of S.Pneumoniae Whole Cell Vaccine Adsorbed to Alum (PATH-wSP) in Healthy Kenyan...

PneumoniaPneumococcal

The purpose of this study is to assess the safety and tolerability of PATH-wSP, administered intramuscularly to healthy Kenyan adults and toddlers who have been primed with a pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV). Additionally, the study will explore whether a measurable immune response is elicited when PATH-wSP is administered to healthy Kenyan adults and toddlers who have been primed with PCV.

Sellick Interest in Rapid Sequence Induction

Rapid Sequence Induction of General AnesthesiaSellick Maneuver3 more

Lung aspiration can occur when a rapid sequence induction of anesthesia is performed (emergency and/or presence of at least one risk factor for regurgitation of stomach contents). The aim of this study is to assess the Sellick maneuver, which is recommended for patient at high risk of aspiration of gastric content during induction of general anesthesia, despite the lack of solid evidence of its efficacy and possible adverse effects The primary outcome of this non inferiority study is the incidence of lung aspiration whether this maneuver is effectively applied or sham.
