The investigators want to assess the efficacy of a pulse-based diet (i.e. a diet that contains lentils, chick-peas, and beans) on the clinical features, biochemical, and hormonal parameters of PCOS compared to the healthy therapeutic lifestyle changes diet.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

The aim of this double-blinded, three-armed randomized controlled trial (RCT) is to evaluate the effects of a 6 months treatment with inositol alone or inositol associated with alpha-lipoic acid in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). The study population is composed of 90 women with PCOS (diagnosed according to the Rotterdam criteria). Subjects are randomized to one of the 3 arms of treatment (Inositol + alpha lipoic acid + folic acid vs inositol + folic acid vs folic acid alone). At recruitment and after 6 months of treatment, the following data are collected: clinical data: height, weight, BMI, waist and hip circumference, blood pressure, Ferriman Gallwey Score, menstrual diary endocrine parameters (serum total and free testosterone levels, SHBG levels) metabolic profile: glycemia and insulinemia at fasting and after oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), serum lipids insulin-sensitivity measured by the hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp and surrogate indexes ovarian ultrasound data. Furthermore, ovulation is evaluated from the 2nd to the 6th month of the study through progesterone serial dosages on weekly urinary samples. The primary outcome of the study is the serum free testosterone variation after 6 months of treatment. Secondary outcomes are the variations of lipid profile, ovarian morphology and insulin-sensitivity after 6 months and the number of ovulations occurring in the last 4 months of treatment.

Acupuncture or Metformin for Insulin Resistance in Women With PCOS

The hypothesis is that acupuncture is equally effective as metformin (both treatments combined with lifestyle management) in improving whole body glucose homeostasis in insulin resistant women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and that both are superior to lifestyle management alone. The investigators hypothesize that acupuncture and metformin induce ovulation and improve hyperandrogenism, as well as health related quality of life (HRQoL) and symptoms of anxiety and depression. Although equally effective (acupuncture and metformin), the investigators hypothesize that acupuncture is associated with less negative side-effects. The investigators also hypothesize that these treatments have the potential to restore epigenetic and molecular alterations in target tissues (endometrial-, adipose-, and skeletal muscle tissue) and thus have the potential to prevent the development of type 2 diabetes (T2D).

Go Girls! Fitness Support Group Intervention Effectiveness Study

The main purpose of this study is to determine if the Go Girls! program to take place at the Kluge Children's Rehabilitation Center Therapeutic Recreation Gymnasium, intended to introduce girls to a fun, non-threatening environment of exercise with peer support, improves scores on a physical activity enjoyment scale (PACES). Information regarding enjoyment of physical activity before and after the program will allow objective evaluation of whether the program is achieving its mission. Qualitative responses to the questionnaires will give program leaders a better sense of potential attitudes and barriers to regular exercise for teen girls. These responses will be used to shape activities during this or future programs for teens. Anthropometric (e.g. body weight, blood pressure, waist circumference) and biochemical (bloodwork) data will allow us to determine whether any change in metabolic risk factors can be seen from this 6-month once weekly intervention.

A protocol was developed to improve pregnancy results after IVM compared to results from studies in the literature. Differences from most published protocols include the use of the Steiner-Tan needle to optimize oocyte environment during oocyte retrieval, use of oral medications and very low doses of FSH, and delayed embryo transfer during subsequent warmed cryo-preserved embryo transfer. Eligible patient have a PCO pattern in their ovaries during transvaginal ultrasound.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

Polycystic ovary is one of the most common metabolic and endocrine disorders in women of reproductive age group. The Rotterdam criteria are used internationally for its diagnosis. It has been reported that 57% of these women have at least one mental disorder. There is no health without mental health and it is fundamental to the good health and well-being of an individual. Women with PCOS are at risk of a wide range of significant psychological difficulties including depression, anxiety, eating disorders, sexual disorders, low self-esteem, poor body image, and overall low quality of life. In the healthy population, exercise plays a pivotal role in the optimization of mental health, but there is little evidence available to demonstrate its effects on women with PCOS. So, this study has been designed to study the effects of structured aerobics exercise programs on the mental and physical health of women with PCOS.
