Study of the Effects of Commercial Air Travel on the Lungs

Healthy VolunteersChuvash Polycythaemia

The study hypothesis is that commercial air travel causes an increase in the blood pressure in the lungs (pulmonary artery pressure) that can be clinically relevant. Portable echocardiography (heart ultrasound) now offers a non-invasive means of studying this in-flight.

MPN (Myeloproliferative Neoplasms)

This is a Phase IV, multicenter, non-interventional, non-randomized, prospective, observational study in an adult population (patients >18 years old) of men and women who have been diagnosed with clinically overt PV and are being followed in either community or academic medical centers in the United States who will be enrolled over a 12-month period and observed for 36 months from the date the last patient is enrolled.

Research Tissue Bank

MyelofibrosisIdiopathic Myelofibrosis2 more

This study that will allow for the preservation and/or storage of a small portion one or more of the following tissues: Peripheral blood Bone marrow Bone marrow biopsy A phlebotomized unit of blood Spleen cells Toenail clippings This material will be used for the study of Myeloproliferative Disorders (MPD) by researchers. The goals of this research study are to understand the causes of MPDs, how to diagnose them more easily and how to treat them better. MPD is a disease affecting hematopoietic stem cells. Hematopoietic stem cells are cells that make blood cells. These stem cells grow in the center portion of the bones called bone marrow. Under some conditions, these cells are also found in blood. There are several diseases, which are classified as MPD. These include polycythemia vera (too many red blood cells), essential thrombocythemia (too many platelets), and idiopathic myelofibrosis (abnormal blood cells and fibers build up in the bone marrow). These syndromes carry a high risk of developing leukemia. It is important to continue to learn more about these blood cancers and to learn more about the effectiveness and potential side effects of various treatments.

Tissue Banking Study - Polycythemia Vera or Essential Thrombocythemia (PV & ET) Patients

Polycythemia VeraEssential Thrombocythemia

The purpose of the study is to isolate and characterize stem cells of patients with Polycythemia Vera (PV) and Essential Thrombocythemia (ET) to find out why these cells are not working the way they should be and why they seem to be sensitive to regulatory factors in the blood, such as clotting.

Influence of Umbilical Cord Clamping Time in the Newborn

Anemia NeonatalPolycythemia Secondary2 more

This study compares two umbilical cord clamping times; the early one, up to a minute (ECC) and the late or delayed one, when the cord stop beating (DCC). The additional blood volume delivered to the newborn from the placenta - placental transference - by delaying umbilical cord ligation, increases the contribution of neonatal iron with increased iron stores in the infant, without increasing neonatal morbidity.

Hematopoietic/Lymphoid CancerAccelerated Phase Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia155 more

RATIONALE: Infection prophylaxis and management may help prevent cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection caused by a stem cell transplant. PURPOSE:This clinical trial studies infection prophylaxis and management in treating cytomegalovirus infection in patients with hematologic malignancies previously treated with donor stem cell transplant.

StatStrip Lactate, Hemoglobin, and Hematocrit Meter in Whole Blood

SepsisAnemia2 more

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the clinical utility of the StatStrip Lactate, Hemoglobin and Hematocrit Hospital Meter System in the testing of whole blood specimens from patients in hospital settings by CLIA waived operators, over a period of at least twenty days. The specimens shall include capillary (obtained by fingerstick), and venous whole blood. The study will also evaluate the use of a Fingerstick Blood Contamination Barrier for capillary sampling from the fingertip. This submission to the FDA is intended for a Point of Care (POC), CLIA waived device for whole blood capillary and venous lactate, and hemoglobin and hematocrit measurements.
