A Comparison of the Safety and Effectiveness of Two Forms of Patient-controlled Pain Medication...

PainPostoperative

The purpose of this study is to compare two pain medications delivered by two different forms of patient-controlled pain management systems: the Fentanyl HCl Patient-Controlled Transdermal System (E-TRANS fentanyl) and the morphine intravenous pump. Fentanyl HCl and morphine are narcotic pain relievers. The E-TRANS fentanyl system is a small unit worn on the patient's upper outer arm or chest that uses low-intensity electrical current to deliver fentanyl through the skin and into the patient's bloodstream. The patients studied will be those who have just had scheduled abdominal or pelvic surgery.

Safety and Efficacy of Multiple Doses of Intranasal Ketorolac in Postoperative Pain Following Major...

Postoperative Pain

Ketorolac has been marketed for several years in other forms (tablet and injectable) for the short-term relief of pain. This study will test whether a new dosage form (nasal spray) containing ketorolac is effective at relieving the pain of major abdominal surgery, and will also assess product safety. Previous studies with the nasal spray have suggested that it is similar to the previously approved injectable form in effectiveness for pain relief and in its safety profile. Patients will be randomized in a 2:1 ratio to receive intranasal ketorolac or placebo when the pain reaches a moderate level (40 on a scale of 100) following surgery. After the first dose, subjects will receive study drug every 6 hours for 48 hours, and then as needed (up to 4 times a day) for a total of 5 days. If pain is not adequately relieved by the study drug, subjects will be given morphine sulfate or other standard analgesics. Follow-up safety evaluations will occur about 1 and 2 weeks after the start of dosing. Subjects will be asked to answer questions about their pain relief and any possible side effects of the drug during the study, and will be given physical examinations, including nasal evaluations, before and during the clinical trial. A small amount of blood will be drawn for routine clinical laboratory testing.

Administration of Ketamine to Prevent the Post-operative Pain

Postoperative PainBreast Cancer

The surgery of breast cancer is responsible for post-operative pain, needing in about 30% some morphine consumption; like that, the association of ketamine with general anaesthesia may decrease morphine's use and so its adverse effects. The purpose is to evaluate the analgesic effect of a receptor NMDA's antagonist ( ketamine)

OXY-1: The Pharmacogenetics of Oxycodone Analgesia in Postoperative Pain

Postoperative Pain

Patients undergoing surgery (thyroidectomy and hysterectomy) will postoperatively receive oxycodone intravenously (IV) as pain management with morphine as an escape medicine, if there is insufficient pain relief with oxycodone. Patients' pain and side effects will be registered and after 24 hours they will answer a questionnaire. All included patients will be genotyped accordingly to CYP2D6 and relevant single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), and measures of plasma levels of oxycodone will be performed.

Use of Ketorolac in Management of Post-Operative Pain After Heart Surgery

Pain Management Following Cardiopulmonary Bypass Surgery

This study evaluates the safety and efficacy of ketorolac for post-operative pain management after heart surgery. Ketorolac appears to provide enhanced pain relief while also decreasing the requirements for morphine during the (immediate) 24-hour post-operative period.

Massage After Surgery To Help Treat Post-Operative Pain

Postoperative Pain

Postoperative pain is often undertreated. Although studies have demonstrated that many patients experience a substantial degree of unrelieved pain following operative procedures and that this pain can increase the incidence of serious complications, the management of discomfort continues to be suboptimal. Narcotic analgesia is the mainstay of acute postoperative pain management but patient, clinician, and institutional barriers often limit the effectiveness of drug treatment. Furthermore, pharmacologic interventions alone may not address all the factors involved in the conscious experience of pain. Massage is a complementary or adjunctive medical technique that has been used for thousands of years. Yet there is scant research related to the use of massage therapy in postoperative pain management. Used in tandem with pharmacologic treatments, massage may have the potential to substantially improve acute pain relief.
