Effects of Exercise on Cervical Pain Through Educational Videos

Due to the increased prevalence of neck pain in studied adolescents and young adults, this intervention is carried out, which mainly seeks to compare and verify the effectiveness of therapeutic exercise with education, compared to education alone. It is also necessary to mention the high levels of stress levels reported in students, which can affect the increase in pain and the perception of these at times when stress increases. The intervention has been decreed in the weeks before and during the exam period at the University of Valencia, to see if the neck pain experienced by students at similar stages of their academic life is prevented or reduced. It is decided to use education above all to give the participants a tool that allows the participants to find out what happens and why it happens when the participants suffer from neck pain, as well as an explanation of the pathology and the risk factors and how to avoid -the bear. In addition, knowledge about the condition in question can lead to a reconceptualization of pain, changing the approach and exposing a different approach, when treating the pathology. It must be said that in the structure and layout of the informative document, the investigators think of an instrument that can serve the participants for the future. Another reason for carrying out the study is the few tests on neck pain carried out with new technologies. The use of videos, therefore, seeks to facilitate access to the information provided, being a useful and practical tool for students, familiar with the use of new technologies. In addition, the training is intended to be as didactic as possible, the chosen exercises are carefully explained and the fact that they are found in videos and not in a practical class, favors access to the content in these, for that the participants use the videos at their disposal. Finally, treating neck pain with training and education and taking into account the stress of students, brings to conventional treatment an interesting perspective of coping, focused on the biopsychosocial field.

The purpose of this study is to determine the prevalence of neck and shoulder pain in Danish fighter pilots, helicopter pilots and helicopter flight crew and to evaluate the effect of a 24 weeks exercise intervention for fighter pilots.

Healing With Venlafaxine After Injury (HELP)

Neck Pain

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the potential efficacy of venlafaxine administration in reducing acute and chronic musculoskeletal pain in individuals presenting to the ED for evaluation after motor vehicle collision. Participants: Participants will consist of 60 patients between the ages of 18-50 who present to the ED within 12 hours post-motor vehicle collision. Patients who report a neck pain score > 6 will be screened for further eligibility. Procedures (methods): Using a placebo-controlled, randomized, double-blind trial design, 60 high risk patients will be randomized to venlafaxine vs. placebo in the ED. The ability of venlafaxine to decrease acute and persistent musculoskeletal neck pain will be assessed during serial short-term telephone follow-ups as well as more in-depth follow-ups at 6 weeks, 4 months, and 6 months post-MVC.

Examination of Cervical Thoracic Differentiation Testing in Individuals With Neck Pain

Neck pain is a very common diagnosis and physical therapy, specifically thoracic manipulation, has been shown to be an effective treatment. Thoracic manipulation, which involves a quick thrust type push to a segment of the midback region of the spine, has been shown to decrease pain and improve function in individuals with neck pain. However, it is not known if there is a test that will accurately identify individuals with neck pain who would respond more favorably to thoracic techniques. The Cervical-Thoracic Differentiation Test (CTDT) is a test used clinically to differentiate pain originating from either the cervical (neck) or thoracic (midback) regions of the spine in individuals with neck pain. It has also been speculated that specific unloading tests, where a tester selectively unloads a portion of the weight of the cervical or thoracic spine through manual distraction may help determine who will respond more favorably to thoracic treatment. To the best of our knowledge, despite widespread clinical use, these tests have not been tested for validity or reliability at this time. Therefore, the purposes of this research are to assess the reliability and criterion referenced validity of the CTDT and unloading tests, as well as examine the relationship between tests and baseline subject characteristics.

The Effect of Nitroprusside on Intrauterine Device (IUD) Insertion

Increasing accessibility of long-acting reversible contraceptive methods, like intrauterine devices (IUDs), is an important strategy to reduce the risk of unintended pregnancy. Unfortunately, fear of IUD insertion in women who have not had children is common among health care providers and women alike, and this limits IUD use. To increase acceptance of this highly effective contraceptive, there is need to investigate novel, low cost, easily applied and accessible techniques to improve the insertion experience. This is a pilot study to evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of nitroprusside gel applied intracervically as an intervention to improve the IUD insertion experience for both patient and provider.

Myofascial Pain Syndrome

Chronic neck pain is a common condition that can negatively impact quality of life. Substance P is one of the chemicals in the body that can transmit pain signals from overloaded neck muscles to the brain. Topical capsaicin blocks the action of Substance P by releasing, and subsequently depleting the body's store of Substance P in the nerves. Topical capsaicin has been reported to be an effective therapy for a number of persistent pain conditions including diabetic neuropathy, post-herpetic neuralgia, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and post-mastectomy pain. This study will evaluate the efficacy of topical capsaicin to reduce pain and improve health-related quality of life in adults with chronic muscular neck pain.

Improving Safety of Diagnosis and Therapy in the Inpatient Setting

To improve the safety of diagnosis and therapy for a set of conditions and undifferentiated symptoms for hospitalized patients, the investigators will employ a set of methods and tools from the disciplines of systems engineering, human factors, quality improvement,and data analytics to thoroughly analyze the problem, design and develop potential solutions that leverage existing current technological infrastructure, and implement and evaluate the final interventions. The investigators will engage the interdisciplinary care team and patient (or their caregivers) to ensure treatment trajectories match the anticipated course for working diagnoses (or symptoms), and whether they are in line with patient and clinician expectations. The investigators will use an Interrupted time series (ITS) design to assess impact on diagnostic errors that lead to patient harm. The investigators will perform quantitative and qualitative evaluations using implementation science principles to understand if the interventions worked, and why or why not.
