Combination Chemotherapy in Treating Patients With Neurofibromatosis and Progressive Plexiform Neurofibromas...

Neurofibromatosis Type 1Precancerous Condition

RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Combining methotrexate with vinblastine may be effective treatment for neurofibromatosis type 1 associated with progressive plexiform neurofibromas. PURPOSE: Phase II trial to study the effectiveness of combination chemotherapy in treating patients who have neurofibromatosis type 1 associated with progressive plexiform neurofibromas.

Selenium for Prevention of Adenomatous Colorectal Polyps

Colorectal CancerAdenomatous Colorectal Polyps1 more

RATIONALE: Chemoprevention therapy is the use of certain drugs to try to prevent the development or recurrence of cancer. Selenium may be effective in preventing the recurrence of adenomatous colorectal polyps. PURPOSE: This randomized phase III trial is studying selenium to see how well it works in preventing the recurrence of polyps in patients with adenomatous colorectal polyps.

Calcitriol in Preventing Prostate Cancer in Patients With Prostatic Intraepithelial Neoplasia

Precancerous/Nonmalignant ConditionProstate Cancer

RATIONALE: Chemoprevention is the use of certain drugs to keep cancer from forming, growing, or coming back. The use of calcitriol may prevent prostate cancer. It is not yet known whether calcitriol is more effective than observation in preventing prostate cancer. PURPOSE: This randomized phase II trial is studying how well calcitriol works in preventing prostate cancer in patients with prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia.

Moxifloxacin Compared With Ciprofloxacin/Amoxicillin in Treating Fever and Neutropenia in Patients...

Chronic Myeloproliferative DisordersFever12 more

RATIONALE: Antibiotics such as amoxicillin, ciprofloxacin, and moxifloxacin may be effective in preventing or controlling fever and neutropenia in patients with cancer. It is not yet known whether moxifloxacin alone is more effective than amoxicillin combined with ciprofloxacin in treating neutropenia and fever. PURPOSE: This randomized clinical trial is studying how well moxifloxacin works and compares it to ciprofloxacin together with amoxicillin in treating neutropenia and fever in patients with cancer.

Methadone, Morphine, or Oxycodone in Treating Pain in Patients With Cancer

Brain and Central Nervous System TumorsChronic Myeloproliferative Disorders10 more

RATIONALE: Methadone, morphine, or oxycodone may help relieve pain caused by cancer. It is not yet known whether methadone is more effective than morphine or oxycodone in treating pain in patients with cancer. PURPOSE: This randomized clinical trial is studying methadone to see how well it works compared with morphine or oxycodone in treating pain in patients with cancer.

ACAPHA in Preventing Lung Cancer in Former Smokers With Bronchial Intraepithelial Neoplasia

Lung CancerPrecancerous Condition

RATIONALE: Chemoprevention is the use of certain drugs to keep cancer from forming. The use of ACAPHA, a combination of six herbs, may prevent lung cancer from forming in former smokers with bronchial intraepithelial neoplasia. PURPOSE: This randomized phase II trial is studying the side effects and how well ACAPHA works in preventing lung cancer in former smokers with bronchial intraepithelial neoplasia.

Spectroscopy in Diagnosing Dysplasia and Neoplasia in the Cervix in Women Undergoing Colposcopy...

Cervical CancerPrecancerous Condition

RATIONALE: New diagnostic procedures, such as spectroscopy, may be a less invasive way to check for dysplasia and neoplasia in the cervix. Spectroscopy may also used as a screening test to help doctors find cervical cancer sooner, when it may be easier to treat. PURPOSE: This clinical trial is studying how well spectroscopy works in diagnosing dysplasia and neoplasia in the cervix in women undergoing colposcopy or Pap testing.
