Monounsaturated Fatty Acid Supplementation for Overweight and Obese Individuals With Prediabetes...

PreDiabetesInsulin Resistance2 more

The purpose of this study is to understand and determine whether Palmitoleic acid (POA), monounsaturated omega-7 fatty acid (exists in regular diet), improves insulin sensitivity and decreases liver fat accumulation in humans. Unlike others, the study will use POA as a dietary supplement, rather than complex oils, which contain a significant amount of saturated fat palmitic acid. Palmitic acid has known harmful effects on the body. Hence, eliminating palmitic acid from supplementation of POA might increase its benefits. This trial stems from the preclinical discoveries that POA acting as a fat hormone, has beneficial effects on the liver, muscle, vessels, and fat tissue. Supporting this, higher POA levels in humans have been shown to be correlated with a reduced risk of developing type-2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases such as heart attacks. In animals, it has been observed that POA improves sugar metabolism in a number of mechanisms related to the liver and muscle. Based on these findings, the design of this study is a double-blind placebo-controlled trial that tests the effects of POA on insulin sensitivity of overweight and obese adult individuals with pre-diabetes.

Effect of Pasteurized Akkermansia Muciniphila on Insulin Resistance in Otherwise Healthy Subjects...

Metabolic SyndromePre-diabetes1 more

The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the efficacy of pasteurized Akkermansia muciniphila (pAKK) in improving insulin sensitivity in hyperglycaemic, but otherwise healthy persons with metabolic syndrome. This is the primary objective of this study. Secondary objectives consist of evaluation of the effects of next generation beneficial microbes on metabolic health, anthropometry and body composition, and safety. Therefore, the trial is designed as a phase 2, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel group, multi-center trial comparing pAKK with placebo in restoring insulin sensitivity in dysglycaemic but otherwise healthy subjects with metabolic syndrome. In total, 144 enrolled participants will attend 6 study visits in total. Study visits may be conducted in the clinic, at home by a Healthcare Professional, or by telephone / telemedicine.

Bialystok Exercise Study in Diabetes

Type 2 DiabetesPreDiabetes3 more

The "Bialystok Exercise Study in Diabetes" (BESD), is an exercise intervention study, conducted by the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetology and Internal Medicine and Clinical Research Centre of the Medical University of Bialystok. In the project, sedentary males at different stages of dysglycemia living in the city of Bialystok participate in three months of an exercise intervention consisting of supervised training sessions at a local fitness centre. The aim of the study is to assess the effectiveness of the exercise intervention in patients at different stages of dysglycemia progression, including type 2 diabetes and prediabetes and compare the response between groups.

Personalized Nutrition Based on the Glycemic Response: Effect of Diet and Intestinal Microbiota...

ObesityPre Diabetes

This study will investigate whether changes in the intestinal microbiota generated through a nutritional strategy based on functional foods, modifies postprandial glycemic responses in subjects with prediabetes and obesity, which in turn will generate a personalized dietary intervention through a prediction of postprandial blood glucose levels.

Effects of an Exercise and Lifestyle Education Program for People With Diabetes and Prediabetes...

Diabetes MellitusPrediabetes

The purpose of this trial is to pragmatically investigate whether participation of people with diabetes and prediabetes in an Exercise and Lifestyle Education Program (i.e., exercise and education classes) results in better functional capacity, disease-related knowledge and behavior, and cardiometabolic health parameters when compared to Exercise Program (i.e., exercise class only). In addition, the effects of these interventions will be evaluated on other outcomes: program adherence, satisfaction with the program, quality of life, diet quality, depression, and morbidity associated with diabetes in the 6 months follow-up.

The SLIM LIVER Study

HIV-1-infectionAdiposity3 more

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the safety and tolerability of a drug called semaglutide and to see whether it can reduce IHTG. IHTG will be measured by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI; an MRI machine contains a powerful magnet that uses simple radio waves to take pictures of organs). Semaglutide (brand name Ozempic®) is a drug that is used to treat people who have diabetes; it also causes weight loss and may provide some protection against cardiovascular disease and diabetes. In PLWH, the use of semaglutide to reduce weight and the level of IHTG are experimental.
