Vaccine To Prevent Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia or Cervical Cancer in Younger Healthy Participants...

Cervical CancerPrecancerous Condition

RATIONALE: Chemoprevention is the use of certain drugs to keep cancer form forming, growing, or coming back. Vaccines may help the body build an effective immune response against human papillomavirus and may be effective in preventing cervical intraepithelial neoplasia or cervical cancer. It is not yet known whether human papillomavirus vaccine is more effective than hepatitis A vaccine in preventing cervical intraepithelial neoplasia or cervical cancer. PURPOSE: This randomized phase III trial is studying human papillomavirus vaccine to see how well it works compared to hepatitis A vaccine in preventing cervical intraepithelial neoplasia or cervical cancer in younger healthy participants.

UMCC 9609 Tretinoin in Preventing Cancer of the Cervix in Patients With Cervical Neoplasia

Cervical CancerPrecancerous/Nonmalignant Condition

RATIONALE: Tretinoin may help cervical neoplasia cells develop into normal cervical cells. It is not yet known whether tretinoin is more effective than a placebo in preventing cervical cancer in patients with cervical neoplasia. PURPOSE: Randomized clinical trial to study the effectiveness of tretinoin in preventing cervical neoplasia from developing into cervical cancer.

Pirfenidone in Treating Young Patients With Neurofibromatosis Type 1 and Plexiform Neurofibromas...

Neurofibromatosis Type 1Precancerous Condition

RATIONALE: Chemoprevention therapy is the use of certain drugs to try to prevent the development or recurrence of cancer. Pirfenidone may slow the growth or prevent further development of plexiform neurofibromas. PURPOSE: Phase I trial to study the effectiveness of pirfenidone in treating young patients who have neurofibromatosis type 1 and plexiform neurofibroma.

Fluorescence and Reflectance Spectroscopy During Colposcopy in Detecting Cervical Intraepithelial...

Cervical CancerPrecancerous Condition

RATIONALE: New diagnostic procedures such as fluorescence and reflectance spectroscopy (shining light on tissue and measuring patterns of light reflected) may improve the ability to noninvasively detect cervical intraepithelial neoplasia and dysplasia. PURPOSE: This diagnostic trial is studying how well fluorescence and reflectance spectroscopy during colposcopy work in detecting cervical intraepithelial neoplasia and dysplasia in healthy participants with a history of normal Pap smears.

Does Antibiotic Prophylaxis Reduce Wound Complications After Vulvar Excision of Premalignant Lesions...

Premalignant Vulvar LesionBenign Vulvar Lesion

A randomized control trial will provide the most reliable data to determine the role of prophylactic antibiotics to decrease the wound complication rate. The investigators plan to perform a pilot study to evaluate actual rates of wound complications and how long it takes to recruit 50 patients.

Broccoli Sprout Extract in Preventing Recurrence in Patients With Tobacco-Related Head and Neck...

HNSCCHead and Neck Cancer6 more

This study is being done to see whether Avmacol®, a dietary supplement made from broccoli sprout and seed extract powder, induces changes in inner cheek cells that may be protective against environmental toxins such as tobacco. There are three main goals of the study: To learn whether the dietary supplement, Avmacol®, can stimulate cheek cells to repair damage from environmental toxins; to learn how the body metabolizes Avmacol®, by measuring its byproducts in the participant's urine and blood; to learn whether the immune system can be stimulated by Avmacol®, by studying the natural killer cells and T cells in the participant's blood.

Lavage of the Uterine Cavity for the Diagnosis of Ovarian and Tubal Carcinoma and Their Premalignant...

Ovarian Epithelial Cancer

Epithelial Ovarian cancer (EOC) is the leading cause of death among gynaecologic malignancies in western civilized countries, with an estimated prevalence in Europe and the US of 752,600 in 2007 and 59,828 deaths annually. State-of-the-art diagnostic tests for EOC include transvaginal ultrasonography and serum cancer antigen (CA-125) measurements; the specificity of these diagnostic tools however is low, and both tests are not effective enough at detecting EOC early enough to improve clinical outcomes. Definitive diagnosis of EOC still relies on histological or cytological confirmation. These findings underline the importance for an effective test for early detection of EOC. In the current project we will obtain a lavage of the uterine cavity. It will be investigated whether cells from EOCs or genetic material from those cells can be detected in the lavage fluid. Aim of this study: There is a clear clinical need for a diagnosis test to detect EOC at an earlier stage.

S0000D: Effect of Vitamin E and/or Selenium on Colorectal Polyps in Men Enrolled on SELECT Trial...

Colorectal CancerPrecancerous Condition

RATIONALE: Studying tissue samples in the laboratory from participants receiving treatment on the Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial (SELECT) SWOG-S0000 may help doctors predict a participant's response to treatment and help plan the best treatment. PURPOSE: This phase III trial is studying the effect of vitamin E and/or selenium on colorectal polyps in men enrolled on SELECT Trial SWOG-S0000.
