This randomized phase III trial is studying eflornithine and sulindac to see how well they work compared to a placebo in preventing colorectal cancer in patients with colon polyps. Chemoprevention is the use of certain drugs to keep cancer from forming, growing, or coming back. The use of eflornithine and sulindac may prevent colorectal cancer. It is not yet known whether eflornithine and sulindac are more effective than a placebo in preventing colorectal cancer

RATIONALE: Chemoprevention therapy is the use of certain drugs to try to prevent the development or recurrence of cancer. Iloprost may be effective in preventing lung cancer. PURPOSE: This randomized phase II trial is studying how well iloprost works in preventing lung cancer in patients who are at high risk for this disease.

This study investigates families with at least two cases of B-cell lymphoproliferative disorders (LPD), and evaluates the prevalence of LPD in families, the relationship between medical history, genetic factors, and the risk of familial LPD, and various clinical outcomes for these families in a multiethnic population of Jews and Arabs in Israel.

The aim of study is to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of using mobile phone photographs versus conventional clinical examination as a screening tool for early detection of oral cancer.

RATIONALE: Darbepoetin alfa may cause the body to make more red blood cells. Red blood cells contain iron that is needed to carry oxygen to the tissues. It is not yet known whether giving darbepoetin alfa (DA) together with intravenous iron or oral iron is more effective than giving darbepoetin alfa together with a placebo in treating anemia caused by chemotherapy. PURPOSE: This randomized phase III trial is studying giving darbepoetin alfa together with iron to see how well it works compared with giving darbepoetin alfa together with a placebo in treating anemia caused by chemotherapy in patients with cancer.

RATIONALE: American ginseng may reduce fatigue in patients with cancer. It is not yet known whether American ginseng is more effective than a placebo in treating cancer-related fatigue. PURPOSE: This randomized phase III trial is studying American ginseng to see how well it works in treating patients with fatigue caused by cancer.

RATIONALE: Epoetin alfa and darbepoetin alfa may cause the body to make more red blood cells. They are used to treat anemia caused by chemotherapy in patients with cancer. PURPOSE: This randomized clinical trial is studying four different schedules of epoetin alfa or darbepoetin alfa to compare how well they work in treating patients with anemia caused by chemotherapy.

RATIONALE: Listening to relaxing music during a bone marrow biopsy may be effective in reducing anxiety and pain. PURPOSE: This randomized clinical trial is studying how well music works in reducing anxiety and pain in adult patients undergoing bone marrow biopsy for hematologic cancers or other diseases.

RATIONALE: Different drug formulations and combinations of drugs may help patients with chronic pain live more comfortably. It is not yet known which regimen is most effective for chronic pain. PURPOSE: Randomized phase III trial to compare the effectiveness of different morphine formulations with or without dextromethorphan in treating chronic pain in patients who have advanced cancer.

RATIONALE: Bone marrow and peripheral stem cell transplantation may be able to replace immune cells that were destroyed by chemotherapy or radiation therapy used to kill tumor cells. PURPOSE: Phase I trial to study the effectiveness of bone marrow and peripheral stem cell transplantation in treating patients who have hematologic cancer.
