Implementation and Evaluation of SBIRT
Substance Use DisordersAlarming rates of unhealthy alcohol, non-prescription drug, and tobacco use highlight the preventable health risks of substance abuse and the urgent need to advance behavioral health systems. Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) is an efficacious and effective strategy for the delivery of early intervention and treatment services for people with substance use disorders as well as for those who are at-risk for developing these disorders. A mixed methods phased cluster randomized approach is used to evaluate SBIRT implementation in one medical surgical unit from each of 14 hospitals to inform SBIRT implementation methods for rural, community and urban settings in Indiana. The long-term objective is to develop an SBIRT toolkit to disseminate and sustain SBIRT use to increase the screening of substance use, delivery of brief interventions, and referral to treatment services. A broader dissemination will follow based on results of this study.
To Reach Unrestricted Services for Transgender Women
Transgender WomenSubstance Abuse1 moreFlorida has the fifth largest transgender population in the United States. Transgender women, particularly those of color, in the southern part of Florida are a marginalized population who are impacted by co-morbidities of substance abuse and HIV in their communities. The overall objective of the study is to use a vetted adapted brief intervention to stem the development of substance abuse in at-risk transgender women, and thereby increase primary and secondary prevention methods such as routine HIV screening, uptake of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and use of non-occupational post-exposure prophylaxis (nPEP).
Linking Epigenomics With Prescription Opioid Abuse and High Impact Musculoskeletal Pain

HabituationPainful cutaneous electrical stimulation (PCES) and corresponding evoked potentials led to a significant pain relief and decrease of evoked potentials and has been used to analyze conditioned pain modulation (CPM). However, it is unknown whether the pain relief results from habituation to the repeated painful electric stimulation. We compared the effects of CPM and habituation on PCES-induced pain and PCES-evoked potentials and analyzed whether increased attention by a random change of electric intensities amplifies the habituation effects.

Our product - Computerized Chemosensory-Based Orbitofrontal Cortex Training (CBOT) - offers a cost-saving, home-based, user-friendly brain stimulation system that increased 6-month treatment retention of OUDs in a pilot study; and also, acutely reduced opioid withdrawal severity and negative affect during induction into opioid maintenance therapy. This study will establish its effectiveness in a broad category of OUD subjects at different stages of OUD care continuum.

A Trial of Connecting to Promote Foster Teen Well-Being
RelationshipFamily (Foster)1 moreThis study evaluates the efficacy of a self-directed parenting program called Connecting in reducing risk of substance use and other risky behaviors in young foster teens (ages 11-15). Half of the participants will receive services as usual from the foster system, while half will participate in the Connecting program. Connecting is a 10-week, self-directed parenting workbook with two digital video discs (DVDs). Families receive weekly telephone support as they complete the program.
