High Light and Low Light Dose PDT in Glioma

Brain and Central Nervous System Tumors

RATIONALE: Photodynamic therapy uses a drug, such as porfimer sodium, that becomes active when it is exposed to a certain kind of light. When the drug is active, tumor cells are killed. Giving photodynamic therapy after surgery may kill any remaining tumor cells. PURPOSE: This randomized clinical trial is studying two different light doses of photodynamic therapy using porfimer sodium to compare how well they work in treating patients who are undergoing surgery for recurrent malignant astrocytoma.

Temozolomide Compared to Procarbazine, Lomustine, and Vincristine in Treating Patients With Recurrent...

Brain and Central Nervous System Tumors

RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Combining more than one drug may kill more tumor cells. It is not yet known which regimen of chemotherapy is more effective in treating recurrent malignant glioma. PURPOSE: Randomized phase III trial to compare the effectiveness of temozolomide alone to that of procarbazine, lomustine, and vincristine in treating patients who have recurrent malignant glioma.

Radiation Therapy Plus Thalidomide and Temozolomide in Treating Patients With Newly Diagnosed Brain...

Brain and Central Nervous System TumorsUnspecified Adult Solid Tumor1 more

RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to damage tumor cells. Thalidomide may stop the growth of cancer by stopping blood flow to the tumor. Combining whole-brain radiation therapy with thalidomide and temozolomide may kill more tumor cells. PURPOSE: Phase II trial to study the effectiveness of combining whole-brain radiation therapy with thalidomide and temozolomide in treating patients who have newly diagnosed brain metastases.

Observation or Radiation Therapy and/or Chemotherapy and Second Surgery in Treating Children Who...

Brain TumorCentral Nervous System Tumor

RATIONALE: Specialized radiation therapy that delivers a high dose of radiation directly to the tumor may kill more tumor cells and cause less damage to normal tissue. Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Giving chemotherapy before surgery may shrink the tumor so that it can be removed during surgery. PURPOSE: Phase II trial to determine the effectiveness of specialized radiation therapy either alone or after chemotherapy and second surgery in treating children who have undergone surgery for localized ependymoma.

Taurolidine in Treating Patients With Recurrent or Progressive Glioma

Brain and Central Nervous System Tumors

RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. PURPOSE: Phase I trial to study the effectiveness of taurolidine in treating patients who have recurrent or progressive glioma.

Brain and Central Nervous System TumorsChildhood Germ Cell Tumor9 more

RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. PURPOSE: This phase I trial is studying the side effects and best dose of ixabepilone in treating young patients with relapsed or refractory solid tumors or leukemia.

Temozolomide Plus Radiation Therapy in Treating Patients With Newly Diagnosed Anaplastic Oligodendrogliomas...

Brain and Central Nervous System Tumors

RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to damage tumor cells. Combining chemotherapy and radiation therapy may kill more tumor cells. PURPOSE: Phase II trial to study the effectiveness of combining temozolomide with radiation therapy in treating patients who have newly diagnosed anaplastic oligodendrogliomas or mixed anaplastic oligoastrocytomas.

ZD 1839 in Treating Patients With Glioblastoma Multiforme in First Relapse

Brain and Central Nervous System Tumors

RATIONALE: Biological therapies such as ZD 1839 may interfere with the growth of tumor cells and slow the growth of glioblastoma multiforme. PURPOSE: Phase II trial to study the effectiveness of ZD 1839 in treating patients who have glioblastoma multiforme in first relapse.

Chemotherapy and Vaccine Therapy Followed by Bone Marrow or Peripheral Stem Cell Transplantation...

Brain and Central Nervous System Tumors

RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Combining chemotherapy with bone marrow or peripheral stem cell transplantation may allow the doctor to give higher doses of chemotherapy drugs and kill more tumor cells. Vaccines made from a person's white blood cells and tumor cells may make the body build an immune response to kill tumor cells. Interleukin-2 may stimulate a person's white blood cells to kill tumor cells. PURPOSE: Phase II trial to study the effectiveness of combination chemotherapy and vaccine therapy followed by bone marrow or peripheral stem cell transplantation and interleukin-2 in treating patients who have recurrent or refractory brain cancer.

SCH 66336 in Treating Children With Recurrent or Progressive Brain Tumors

Brain and Central Nervous System Tumors

RATIONALE: SCH 66336 may stop the growth of tumor cells by blocking the enzymes necessary for cancer cell growth. PURPOSE: This phase I trial is studying the side effects and best dose of SCH 66336 in treating children with recurrent or progressive brain tumors.
