A study to assess the activity of Iressa in patients who's prostate cancer has recurred, and who have rising PSA levels

RATIONALE: Printed educational materials, such as the Facing Forward Series: Life After Cancer Treatment manual, may help make the transition from cancer patient to cancer survivor easier in patients who are finishing treatment for cancer. It is not yet known if the Facing Forward Series: Life After Cancer Treatment manual and The Cancer Information Service, Questions and Answers fact sheet is more effective than the The Cancer Information Service, Questions and Answers fact sheet alone in helping to make life after cancer treatment easier and to improve quality of life in patients with breast cancer, colorectal cancer, prostate cancer, or chest cancer. PURPOSE: This randomized clinical trial is studying how well printed education materials work in assisting patients who are finishing treatment for stage I, stage II, or stage IIIA breast cancer, colorectal cancer, prostate cancer, or chest cancer to make the transition from cancer patient to cancer survivor easier.

RATIONALE: Tadalafil may help prevent erectile dysfunction (ED) in patients with prostate cancer that has been treated with radiation therapy. It is not yet known whether tadalafil is more effective than a placebo in preventing erectile dysfunction. PURPOSE: This randomized phase III trial is studying tadalafil to see how well it works compared with a placebo in preventing erectile dysfunction in patients with prostate cancer treated with radiation therapy.

The purpose of this study is to describe the safety and tolerability of denosumab administration as measured by adverse events, immunogenicity, and safety laboratory parameters in subjects who previously received either zoledronic acid (Zometa®) or denosumab.

RATIONALE: Sildenafil may be effective in helping patients who have undergone treatment for prostate cancer to have an erection for sexual activity and may improve sexual satisfaction and quality of life. PURPOSE: Randomized clinical trial to study the effectiveness of sildenafil in treating erectile dysfunction in patients who have undergone radiation therapy and hormone therapy for prostate cancer in clinical trial RTOG-9910.

RATIONALE: Epoetin alfa may stimulate red blood cell production and may help improve cancer-related anemia and fatigue. Steroid therapy with dexamethasone may increase the effectiveness of epoetin alfa. It is not yet known if epoetin alfa is more effective with or without dexamethasone in treating anemia-related fatigue in patients with prostate cancer. PURPOSE: This randomized phase III trial is studying epoetin alfa and dexamethasone to see how well they work compared to epoetin alfa alone in treating anemia-related fatigue in patients with prostate cancer that is refractory to treatment with hormone therapy.

RATIONALE: Amifostine may be effective in reducing pain, numbness, tingling, and other symptoms of peripheral neuropathy. PURPOSE: This phase II trial is studying how well amifostine works in reducing pain, numbness, tingling, and other symptoms of peripheral neuropathy in patients who have received paclitaxel for solid tumors.

RATIONALE: Gabapentin may be effective in relieving hot flashes in men who have prostate cancer. It is not yet known which regimen of gabapentin is most effective in treating hot flashes. PURPOSE: Randomized phase III trial to compare different regimens of gabapentin in treating men who have prostate cancer.

RATIONALE: Cyproterone acetate may be effective treatment for hot flashes following surgical or chemical castration for prostate cancer. It is not yet known which regimen of cyproterone acetate is more effective for hot flashes. PURPOSE: Randomized phase III trial to determine the effectiveness of cyproterone acetate in treating patients who have hot flashes following surgical or chemical castration for prostate cancer.

Investigators propose an observational interview study to explore how patients understand treatment conversations with their physicians within the framework of health literacy. The study team will test whether patients' understanding of treatment options and side effects can be improved when patients receive a low literacy educational supplement after meeting with their urologist. Investigators will interview a group of newly diagnosed, early stage, African American prostate cancer patients.
