HEalth Promotion Intervention in MEntal Health Care

Unhealthy Lifestyle of Persons With Mental Disorders

Overweight and obesity have become a serious global public health problem and the prevalence of these conditions is even higher among persons with mental disorders, compared with the general population. Overweight and obesity are partially associated with sedentary lifestyles and unhealthy eating habits. The aim of the study is to examine the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of a health promotion intervention targeting physical activity and eating habits in persons with mental disorders. The study hypothesis is that between baseline and the end of the intervention, and after a 6-month follow up period, significant differences in the primary and secondary outcomes between the intervention and control group will be identified. The investigators also hypothesize that the health promotion intervention will be cost-effective.

RCT of Brief Universal Parenting Program to Prevent Child Behavioural and Emotional Difficulties...

Child Behavior DisordersParenting

This study investigates the impact of a Triple P Seminar Series on positive parenting for universal prevention of behavioural and emotional difficulties in a general Greek sample of parents with children aged 2 to 12. It is predicted that, compared to an attention control condition, parents randomised to the Seminar Series will report lower levels of children's disruptive and emotional difficulties at post-intervention. At the same time, it is postulated that parents will show a decrease in dysfunctional discipline styles, greater feelings of self-efficacy as well as lower levels of distress. Lastly, it is hypothesized that the effects observed at post-intervention will remain at the 6-month follow-up.

PsYoungSupport - Web-based Support to Young Careers to Persons With Mental Illness

Mental IllnessWeb

The overall aim with the project PsYoungSupport is to evaluate Internet and communication technology (ICT) health efforts, i.e. information, education and support for young adults (16-25 years) who are first degree relatives or represent the close social network (relative or close friend) of individuals with mental illness, with regard to the process (the quality and usefulness of the support) and the effect (on health and quality of life, situation as relative or part of close social network and consumption of other support/care) of the intervention. The participatory design is one of the foundations of this project, and young adult participants will be consulted through out the research project. PsYoungSupport is a research program comprising three phases, Phase I is a survey of young relatives' and close friends' needs for internet based information, education and support, Phase II is the development of a website, and Phase III is an intervention based on the previous phases. The aim of phase III is to evaluate the effect of an internet based intervention containing information, education and support for young adults in families where a family member suffers from mental illness or functional disability. The participants (N=400) will be randomised to two groups with different kinds of support. The participants will be evaluated using self-questionnaires and web interviews at the following occasions: baseline at the start of the intervention, after 4 months and after 8 months. This project will have implications for persons suffering from mental illness as well as for their relatives and close friends.

Variance of Video Games Playing Patterns Among Adolescents With Psychiatric Disorders

ADHDConduct3 more

As the use of video games (VG) is rapidly increasing, many studies have tries to understand the effects of VG on the children and adolescents playing them. Most of the research was directed towards negative effects (especially violence, attention and school performance), producing mixed results. Recently, more studies had focused their attention on the opposite angle: The influence of the player's mental and behavioral parameters, influencing his VG playing patterns. The focus of most of these researches was time of playing, addictive patterns and exposure to violence. The current study will try to characterize the variance of VG playing pattern among adolescents diagnosed with psychiatric disorders, in order to better under the rich interaction between a player and his VG, and to understand whether VG playing patterns holds diagnostical clues for the child's diagnosis and his inner world.

Keeping Well:Online Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for Pregnant Women With Depressive Symptoms...

AnxietyMental Disorders2 more

Most depression during pregnancy is undetected and untreated although it is known to be harmful both to the woman herself and her future child. When these mental disorders are detected, psychotherapies remain difficult to access, especially in primary care, despite being effective. Also, prenatal depression is known to be a strong risk factor for postnatal depression and may prejudice the mother-infant relationship. This leads us to the following question: Will individual Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) delivered online be a more effective treatment for symptoms of depression in pregnant women, than treatment as usual (TAU)? The proposed randomized controlled trial aims at evaluating the efficacy of internet based cognitive behavioural therapy(CBT) delivered individually via "skype", using video and audio resources, by a fully trained psychotherapist, compared to treatment as usual, in women suffering from symptoms of depression in pregnancy. Hypothesis The internet based interventions will be more effective at reducing symptoms of depression in pregnant women than treatment as usual, in terms of rates of diagnoses and levels of self rated symptoms of depression.

There are several studies that have examined the effect of pharmacological and non-pharmacological behavioural approaches for weight loss in patients with psychosis, however studies examining strategies for prevention of obesity are lacking. This study is an important and novel approach to studying the problem of obesity in those with psychosis.

6-Year Follow-up of a Prevention Program for Bereaved Families

Mental Disorders Diagnosed in Childhood

Six-years following participation in the Family Bereavement Program (FBP) participants in the program as compared to a self-study control group will have lower levels of mental health problems, lower one-year prevalence of mental disorder that meets diagnostic criteria, lower use of substances, higher levels of competence at achieving developmentally appropriate tasks in academic achievement and social competence, and better self-esteem. The effects of the FBP will be moderated by baseline levels of mental health problems and gender. Bereaved caregivers who participated in the program will also show lower levels of mental health problems as compared with controls. Program effects will be mediated by theoretical mediators targeted by the program.
