Reverse Colocated Integrated Care Intervention Among Persons With Severe Persistent Mental Illness...

Mental Illness PersistentChronic Disease5 more

This study evaluated whether patients with severe and persistent mental illness (SPMI) who received coordinated co-located behavioral health and primary care services were more likely to improve health outcomes after 12 months compared to SPMI patients who receive only behavioral health services from the local mental health authority (LMHA) Tropical Texas Behavioral Health (TTBH).The study employed a randomized control trial (RCT) design where intervention participants receiving integrated behavioral health were compared to control participants receiving the usual care provided within an LMHA for SPMI patients. Patients were placed in each group using a randomized number process. Demographic and health outcome data were collected from intervention and control participants at baseline. Health outcome data was subsequently collected at 6-month and 12-month follow-up points.

Mindfulness Intervention for People With Psychosis

Recent-onset Psychosis

People with psychosis demonstrated a tendency to use maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies as compared with healthy control groups. The present study is the first randomized controlled trial of group mindfulness-based intervention for psychosis. Half group will join the mindfulness-based cognitive intervention while another half will participate in psychoeducation to examine whether mindfulness will have a positive impact on emotion regulation and distress.

Improving Access to Early Psychosis Coordinated Specialty Care

Psychosis

The aim of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of developing an Early Psychosis CSC service delivery model suitable for rural settings in NC. Major challenges to delivery of specialized health care services for persons in the early stages of psychosis include the high level of provider expertise and the frequency and intensity of services. These challenges limit the feasibility of brick-and-mortar programs to serve individuals living in rural settings. This study proposes to expand service delivery methods to include telehealth as a potential solution.

The Syn-Sleep Study

REM Sleep Behavior Disorder (iRBD)

In collaboration with approximately 8 centers that specialize in iRBD we will recruit a total of 80 individuals for the study. All subjects will be enrolled into a 2-year longitudinal study where skin biopsies will be performed at 3 sites on each patient at 12-month intervals (baseline, year 1, year 2). Plasma blood collection will be performed at 12-month intervals (baseline, year 1, year 2). Detailed quantified examination, cognitive evaluation, medical history, and questionnaires will be performed at each visit. Additional biomarker, imaging and clinical information (if available) will be obtained for the purpose of determining phenoconversion to clinically apparent synucleinopathy. Subjects enrolled in the study will have baseline evaluations and follow up visits at 12 and 24 months to define any changes to clinical diagnosis (clinical phenoconversion). Skin biopsies will be repeated at the 12- and 24-month follow up visits to determine the rate of P-SYN accumulation over time and the rates of nerve fiber degeneration within punch skin biopsies.

Development and Evaluation of an Intervention (AiMH) for People With Severe Mental Illness Living...

Severe Mental Disorder

People with severe mental illness (SMI) spend a great amount of time in their homes. The home is thus of vital importance for an everyday life with meaningful activities. Systematic description of possibilities for meaningful activity in Supported Housing (SH) is however lacking. Even more importantly, support to meaningful activity in the SH context is sadly lacking. That there is a need for support to activity for those who live in SH is partly evident from research, but has also become obvious through several contacts between the investigators' research group and staff working in SH settings. In a first step the investigators described how people with SMI use their time while being at home and how the participants perceive their possibilities for being active. Comparisons were made with people with SMI who had ordinary housing and got housing support. A mixed-methods approach with well-established rating scales and qualitative interviews was used. The current study aims are to: Based on the findings from Step 1 above, develop an intervention for those who live in SH. The intervention goal is to increase the possibilities for satisfying engagement in activities in one's home. The intervention will also build on previous experiences form developing and evaluating interventions for the target group. Investigate what changes people who participate in such an intervention will make regarding engagement in activities, satisfaction with activities, recovery from mental illness, self-rated health, and quality of life. Investigate how users and staff perceive the SH services' possibilities to offer or stimulate to different types of activity, as well as their satisfaction with the new intervention. People with SMI are a sadly neglected group with respect to access to meaningful activities. Enriching supported with features that enable more meaningful activity in the home context could lead to gains for the individual (increased well-being) as well as society (better services and decreased needs for support). The project is of relevance for both persons with SMI and society through its emphasis on 1) well-being among people with substantial functional limitations and 2) a meaningful everyday life in the intersection between housing and activity.
