We hope to learn more about the biology of psychiatric illness with the hope of improving the diagnosis and treatment of such psychiatric conditions as major depression.

We believe information to be obtained from this proposed study will prove critical for planning future VA healthcare strategies and developing effective and efficient treatments targeting pain and emotional adjustment difficulties among individuals with polytrauma and returning Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) personnel. More specifically, this study will be the first to provide systematic data regarding pain and emotional problem prevalence, course, associated impairments, risk factors, and barriers to care and community reintegration among returning OEF and OIF service members with and without polytrauma.

Medications like olanzapine have been associated with the development of weight gain and diabetes in some patients. It is not known if the increased risk of developing diabetes is a direct effect on insulin or simply related to weight gain. We hope to learn in this study whether or not olanzapine directly slows down insulin secretion from the pancreas, thereby increasing the risk of developing diabetes.

The purpose of this study is to determine whether HIV and anti-HIV drugs cause mental health problems or make mental health problems worse in children and adolescents who were infected with HIV at birth.

This pilot study evaluates an individualized health promotion program for people with mental illness receiving services at a mental health center in Keene, NH. The study will test the following hypotheses: Hypothesis 1: Compared to baseline (pre-study) levels, participants in the In SHAPE program will demonstrate increased physical activity as indicated by self-report and observed measures. Hypothesis 2: Compared to baseline (pre-study) levels, participants in the In SHAPE program will demonstrate improved fitness and health status as indicated by greater capacity on the 6-minute walk test, one mile walk test, weight and body composition, and flexibility indexes. The following secondary (exploratory) hypotheses will be considered: Compared to baseline (pre-study) levels, participants in the In SHAPE program will demonstrate improved subjective health status, quality of life, mood, and self-efficacy. In addition, participants will demonstrate improved cardiovascular fitness as indicated by lower pulse rate and blood pressure.

The purpose of this cohort study, using an existing database, is to seek to describe the relationship between psychosocial factors (independent variables) and employment outcomes (dependent variables) in a population of people with complex mental health problems receiving evidence-based supported employment (EBSE) augmented with theory-driven occupational therapy interventions. The intention is to understand the predictive nature of psychosocial factors on the positive outcome of success in achieving paid employment. The Worker role interview (WRI) is routinely used in the research site; an National health Service (NHS) occupational therapy led vocational rehabilitation delivering EBSE service for people with complex mental health problems. An existing database of initial assessments and employment outcomes is available for investigation.

There is currently limited research that addresses the unique medication safety and family planning needs among women of reproductive age with psychiatric conditions. The study will research the feasibility of a novel individualized 1-on-1 counseling session at the Gifford Clinic in the Department of Psychiatry at UCSD that will help women in this population better understand: 1) which of their medications are safe to use in pregnancy, 2) provide education regarding the importance of using contraception and which contraceptive choices are available to them, and 3) raise awareness of any drug-drug interactions that may exist between their medications and their chosen method of contraception. Patients will be given questionnaire to assess their contraceptive utilization. They will also be given a before and after quiz to allow for an objective measure of the patient's increase in knowledge regarding medication safety and contraceptive choices as a result of the investigators intervention.

The aim of the case series study is to explore if a self directed version of the Positive Parenting Program (Triple P) is a feasible and acceptable intervention for individuals with psychosis who are parents.

The objective of this multi-site research collaboration is to test the manifestation and distribution of biological markers for psychosis and affect dimensions across the schizophrenia/bipolar (SZ-BD) diagnostic boundary, and to examine heritability and genetic associations for these biological markers.
