Study of the Difference Between Anorexia Nervosa With a History of Psychological Trauma and Classical...

Anorexia Nervosa

Recent studies suggest that patients with an history of trauma may represent a specific subtype of anorexia nervosa (AM) underlined by specific neurobiological and psychopathological mechanisms. Thus, AM-T subjects would manifest cognitive (specific difficulties in executive functions), emotional (emotional disruption, impulsivity, etc.) and neurobiological (secretion of kynurenine and neurokinins in the face of stress) caracteristics different from those of AM subjects.

Legal-Education Plus Trauma-informed Therapy to Improve Community Acceptance and Reintegration of...

TraumaPsychological1 more

Terrorism is an issue of global concern, and reintegrating repentant terrorists, including their families, has often proved challenging considering the damages done by the terrorist group. Despite Boko Haram atrocities in Nigeria, the focus seems directed toward the repentant terrorists with limited attention to the communities, the trauma they suffered, and their involvement in the design of reintegration programmes. There is also limited community awareness of legal support channels to foster positive reintegration (Ike et al., 2021). The implication is that it risks undermining the social context that informs successful reintegration, improves acceptance, and reduces reoffending. However, there appears to be limited research on this important policy problem in Nigeria. Our study proposes to fill this gap by contributing to the research initiative through a novel cross-disciplinary intervention drawing on law and psychology entitled Legal Education plus Trauma-informed Therapy (LETiT) to improve community acceptance and reintegration of repentant terrorists in Nigeria.

Augmentation of EMDR With MtCS in the Treatment of Fibromyalgia

FibromyalgiaPsychological Trauma2 more

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a generalized, widespread chronic pain disorder and has an estimated prevalence of 2%-4% in the general population. Current pharmacological and psychological interventions frequently produce limited benefits in FM patients. Due to FM's strong association with psychological trauma causing neurobiological alterations in stress response, a trauma-focused psychotherapy is an innovative alternative treatment option. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) has been recognized by the World Health Organization as a first-line therapeutic tool for post-traumatic stress disorder and first evidence suggests that it is also beneficial for patients with FM. Given the complex etiology of FM, a combination of psychotherapy with other treatment options can maximize a potential therapeutic success. A possible candidate herby is Multifocal transcranial Current Stimulation (MtCS), a non-invasive stimulation technique, which can modify neural activities related to pain and which has shown short-term positive effects on chronic pain and quality of life in FM patients. The patient sample will consist of 45 female patients meeting 2016 American College of Rheumatology criteria for FM based on a clinical interview. They will be randomized to 20 sessions of EMDR plus MtCS or EMDR plus sham-MtCS, or Treatment as Usual (TAU). Therapists, raters, and patients will be kept blind to MtCS treatment conditions. Evaluations will be at baseline, post treatment at 6 months, and follow-up at 12 months. Hypotheses are that EMDR improves pain intensity and clinical symptoms at short and long-term, and that MtCS enhances this effect, which will be superior to MtCS-sham.

Optimizing CAB-LA as PrEP for Women Who Inject Drugs

HIV InfectionsOpioid Use2 more

The goal of this study is to elicit information crucial for designing strategies to support engagement in cabotegravir, a long-acting injectable form of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to reduce HIV risk among women who inject drugs (WWID), a population with high unmet need that has been understudied in all phases of PrEP research. The main questions this study aims to answer are: How do WWID perceive long-acting injectable cabotegravir (CAB-LA) as a HIV prevention tool? If and how their decisions to initiate CAB-LA as PrEP are informed by their experiences with other long-acting medications, experience with daily oral medications, and their personal circumstance (e.g., like housing or addition severity)? Do PrEP outcomes (e.g., adherence) and engagement in care over time differ between WWID prescribed CAB-LA versus daily oral PrEP? The sample for this study will be derived from and ongoing prospective trial of "TIARAS," a multi-component behavioral intervention designed to reduce HIV acquisition risk among women who inject drugs (see NCT05192434).

Prevalence of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder and Trauma Symptoms in a General Population Sample...

Post-traumatic Stress DisorderPsychological Trauma

The goal of this observational study is to learn about how many people have post-traumatic stress disorder and related symptoms in the general population of people without any mental illness in the Barcelona region of Catalonia, Spain. The main questions it aims to answer are: What is the prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder in a sample of healthy controls without other mental disorders? What is the prevalence of trauma-related symptoms in a sample of healthy controls without mental illness? What is the prevalence of dissociative symptoms (including symptoms of depersonalisation and somatoform dissociation) in a sample of healthy controls without mental illness? What is the prevalence of recent and childhood traumatic life events in a sample of healthy controls without mental illness? What is the prevalence of difficulties in psychosocial functioning in healthy controls without mental illness? What is the prevalence of depressive symptoms in healthy controls without mental illness? What is the prevalence of general psychiatric symptoms in healthy controls without mental illness? Participants will be asked to take part in an online screening programme, and then to come to an interview with a clinician who will apply validated scales to test the above.

Pedopsychiatric and Multidisciplinary Research Devoted to Children Exposed to the Attack in Nice...

Psychiatric DisorderTrauma1 more

On July 14, 2016, in Nice, children and their families were attacked by the organization "EI". In Nice, 86 deaths, including 10 children, the youngest at 4, were recorded. A number of children, still difficult to assess exactly but over 100, was bereaved. After a traumatic event, multiple clinical consequences may appear in children. Among these consequences, the most common is Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The aim of the study is to characterize the psycho-social factors of risk and / or protection interfering in the children's future, following the mass trauma of 14 July 2016 in Nice on a sample of pediatric population exposed in comparison of children controls. Ancillary study, entilted "The Physalis Child", prospectively observe the presence or not of non-psychotic acousto-verbal hallucinations (AVH) in the population with PTSD from the "Program 14-7". The main objective of this ancillary study will be to identify factors of social and emotional cognition linked to the presence of non-psychotic HAV within the cohort of children exposed to the mass trauma of July 14, 2016 in Nice but also to any type of individual trauma. Ancillary study, entilted "trail of the 14 July attack", prospectively observe the risk of traumatic reactivation.

Early Life Stress and Depression: Molecular and Functional Imaging

DepressionTrauma1 more

Severe childhood adversity accounts for a large portion of psychiatric illness, and an increased risk for major depressive disorder (MDD). For some individuals, childhood adversity has negative psychological and medical consequences; others preserve mental and physical health despite such experiences (they are resilient). In spite of this, little is known about the neurobiological mechanisms related to childhood adversity, especially oxidative stress abnormalities in the brain. To fill this gap, this study combines functional, structural, and molecular imaging approaches to examine the role of oxidative stress abnormalities related to childhood adversity.
