Introduction Seminar About Patient Participation and Treatment Options for Psychiatric Patients...
Mental DisordersPatient participation is a central concept in Norwegian health policy. It is mandatory in hospitals and emphasised as one of the most prioritised areas by the Government. Studies from Norway have repeatedly found that patients who seek help in community mental health centres ("DPS") are dissatisfied with the information they receive and about their possibility for real influence in their treatment. One way to improve individual patient participation might be to give patients information before they start their treatment. This can be done as group based patient education to reduce the resources needed. Furthermore, as there are waiting lists for treatment, such introduction seminars could be held while patients are waiting to use this time in a meaningful way. The present study therefore aims at testing the effect of an introduction seminar for patients on waiting list in a community mental health centre.
Stage-specific Case Management for Early Psychosis
Psychotic DisordersOne of the commonly adopted strategies in improving outcome in psychotic disorders is by focused, specific and intensive intervention in the initial few years of the disorder. However the effects of intervention and the optimal duration of intervention have seldom been examined in randomized studies. This study uses a randomized controlled study design to investigate the effectiveness of stage-specific case-management in improving outcome of first episode psychotic disorders. It also addresses whether two years of case-management is less effective than four years of case-management over a four year period. A total of 360 subjects, who aged 25 above, and diagnosed with first episode psychotic disorders, will be and randomized into 3 groups: (1) standard care alone without case management, (2) two-year case management, (3) four-year case management. All groups will receive usual standard care treatment. This four-year follow-up study will assess symptoms, functioning, quality of life as well as health economics data.
Role of Minocycline in First Episode Psychosis
First Episode PsychosisThe purpose of this study is to determine whether the addition of minocycline or placebo to treatment as usual (TAU): prevents the accumulation of negative symptoms and intellectual decline following a first episode of non-affective psychosis; and whether minocycline stabilizes the efficacy of antipsychotics.
POC Study of Pipamperone Added to Stable Treatment With RIS or PAL in Chronic Schizophrenia
Chronic SchizophreniaSchizoaffective DisorderThis Phase I/IIa Proof-of-Concept (PoC) trial is designed to assess the effect of adding a single and repeated low dose (15mg/d) of pipamperone (PIP) for 6 weeks to stable treatment with an effective dose of risperidone (RIS) or paliperidone (PAL) on functional MRI tests and clinical outcome of chronic schizophrenic patients with residual, so-called 'positive' symptoms, as well as on cognition, motivation, subjective well-being of patients, negative symptoms, general psychopathological symptoms and safety/tolerability.
Seroquel Therapy for Substance Use Disorders Comorbid With Schizophrenia
SchizophreniaSchizoaffective Disorder2 moreIt is hypothesized that the atypical antipsychotic, Seroquel, will cause significant reduction in drug and alcohol cravings in patients with schizophrenia and comorbid cocaine and/methamphetamine dependence compared to the atypical antipsychotic, risperidone (Risperdal). Patients treated with Seroquel will have less use of cocaine and/or methamphetamine as measured by the Time Line Follow-back, over a 24-week follow-up period.
Efficacy of Treating First Episode Psychosis With Folic Acid,B12 and B6 in Addition to Antipsychotic...
First Episode PsychosisThe purpose of this study is to determine whether Vitamin B12,B6 and Folic Acid are effective with antipsychotic medication in the treatment of First Episode Psychosis. The B-complex Vitamins' homocysteine lowering properties may have an effect on cognition and symptoms. We are examining changes in symptoms and cognition over a 3 month period.
Functional Rehabilitation of Older Patients With Schizophrenia
Psychotic DisordersSchizoaffective Disorder1 moreThe primary purpose of this project is to evaluate the efficacy of a group therapy intervention, cognitive behavioral social skills training (CBSST), that teaches social functioning skills and cognitive-behavioral compensatory aids to older patients with schizophrenia. CBSST, therefore, targets the multidimensional deficits that lead to disability in aging veterans with severe mental illness.

Bipolar DisordersMood Disorders2 moreThe primary purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of topiramate compared with placebo in the treatment of acute manic or mixed episodes in patients with Bipolar I Disorder.

SchizophreniaPsychotic DisordersThe purpose of the study is to assess the safety and effectiveness of risperidone (an antipsychotic medication) in adolescents with schizophrenia over 6 months of treatment.
Treatment of MDEs During the Course of Psychotic Disorders With Duloxetine
Psychotic DisordersWe evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of duloxetine in the treatment of major depressive episodes during the course of psychotic disorders
