The study does not involve testing of a drug (no treatment intervention). The study will will use spirometry (breathing tests) in subjects of 40 years of age and older with a history of cigarette smoking with chronic bronchitis to check their disease status and whether or not they have COPD. Also, study subjects will be asked to complete a questionnaire (to answer a list of questions on paper).

This is a research study where researchers are collecting blood to evaluate the genetic characteristics of individuals with chronic lung diseases, including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), interstitial lung disease, cystic fibrosis, and lung cancer.

The purpose of this study is to determine whether the lungs of individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) contain resident memory T lymphocytes that can produce a combination of cytokines that induce the symptoms of an acute exacerbation of COPD (AE-COPD).
