Platelets in Cystic Fibrosis Lung Inflammation

Platelet Levels and Mean Platelet Volume in Patients With CF

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a chronic multiorgan disorder caused by mutations in the CFTR (cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator) gene. Chronic airway infection by bacterial pathogens accounts for the progressive, suppurative pulmonary disease that leads to significant morbidity and mortality in patients with CF. Neutrophil recruitment to the lungs accounts the most important contributor to pulmonary destruction. However, there is evidence that platelets may also have an important role in the pathogenesis of inflammation. To our knowledge, there is few information in platelet levels in patients with cystic fibrosis during pulmonary exacerbation, chronic airway colonization and when stable.

Pulmonary Fibrosis Contact Registry

Pulmonary Fibrosis of Any CausePrimary Supporters/Caretakers of Patients With Pulmonary Fibrosis

As the name states, contact registries securely store contact information from groups of reasonably well-characterized patients (or primary supporters/caregivers) who are interested in being informed about ongoing or future research opportunities. Pulmonary fibrosis (PF) is a condition for which effective therapies have remained elusive, making drug trials and interventional research studies a mainstay in the PF arena over the last decade and for the foreseeable future. A PF Contact Registry will be a conduit to collect, analyze, and disseminate de-identified, group-level data on the clinical phenotypes of PF patients and will house contact information from patients who wish to be informed about research opportunities for which they may qualify. Data contained in the Registry will help inform research hypotheses and guide investigators as they develop research protocols by providing them with numbers of potential subjects who meet particular inclusion/exclusion criteria.

Comparative Study of 3 Portable Oxygen Concentrators During a 6-minute Walk Test in Patients With...

Chronic Obstructive Lung DiseasePulmonary Fibrosis

Background: Portable oxygen concentrators (POCs) featuring the latest integrated oxygen conserving devices (OCDs) provide greater patient accessibility and mobility during ambulation and travel. Recent POCs are compact, lightweight, battery-operated, and require no refill-time, thus meeting patients' clinical and lifestyle needs. There is, however, a lack of research on the clinical performance of the latest POCs that could help to determine their ability to maintain patients' oxygen saturations ≥ 90 % during exercise. Aim: The purpose of this study is to compare the ability of three POCs, with maximum oxygen production capabilities of 950 to 3000 ml per minute, to maintain oxygen saturations ≥ 90 % in patients with chronic lung disease during exercise. Method: Six minute walk tests (6-MWTs) will be administered in order to measure oxygen saturations by pulse oximetry (SpO2) in up to 20 patients with a diagnosis of either Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), or Pulmonary Fibrosis (PF) with documented exertional oxygen desaturations of ≤ 85% on room air. All participants will participate in 4 different 6-minute walk tests: the first will be a control walk performed with the participants' current oxygen system set at their prescribed exertional flow rate. Then, the participants will perform a walk test with each of the three POCs set at the units' maximum pulse dose setting. The order in which the participants use the POCs will be randomly assigned using a sequence generator. Hypothesis: It is hypothesized that all three POCs will provide oxygen saturations ≥ 90 % during exercise in patients with chronic lung disease with moderate to severe exertional oxygen desaturation.

Biomarkers of Iron Homeostasis and Responses to Cystic Fibrosis Pulmonary Exacerbation (CFPE) Treatment...

Cystic Fibrosis

The goal of this study is to identify chemical compounds in the blood and sputum (i.e., biomarkers) that are associated with objective measurements of health status in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). This study builds upon observations that blood levels of hepcidin-25, a protein that regulates how the body uses and stores iron, vary during CF pulmonary exacerbation (CFPE).

Investigating Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis in Greece

Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis

To gain further insight on the characteristics, management, disease progression and the outcomes of patients with IPF, as diagnosed and treated under real-world, clinical practice conditions in Greece. More specifically, this registry will be used to: Provide a comprehensive clinical picture of IPF, Track access to health care and cost of caring for IPF patients over time, Examine the implementation of treatment guidelines used on patients diagnosed with IPF, according to the existing diagnosis guidelines, Characterization of patients on different treatments. To provide information regarding survival and mortality causes, IPF exacerbations as well as IPF patient co-morbidities including myocardial infarction, CNS infarction, other arterial thromboembolic events, deep vein thrombosis, hemorrhage, gastrointestinal perforation and pulmonary hypertension. Data regarding IPF patient hospitalization will be collected and evaluated with regards to potential respiratory causes, and there will be documentation of treatment patterns and economic aspects. Patients will be followed up for 2 years and information regarding IPF treatment changes since the last visit will be collected.

Patient-reported Monitoring of Symptoms and Spirometry Via the patientMpower Platform in Idiopathic...

Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis

Pilot-scale, open-label, fixed-order, two-period crossover study in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) over 16 weeks. Patients will use an electronic health journal (patientMpower platform) to record treatment compliance, forced vital capacity (FVC; daily), impact of IPF on daily life (weekly) and other symptoms. Objectives are to characterise acceptability of patientMpower platform from patient & healthcare professional perspective, impact of active engagement and self-monitoring using patientMpower platform on Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) in IPF, impact of patientMpower platform on medication compliance and correlation between patient-reported PROMs & FVC and clinical outcomes.

68Ga-NOTA-PRGD2 PET/CT in Patients With Lung Injury and Pulmonary Fibrosis

Pulmonary FibrosisUnspecified

This is an open-label positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) study to investigate the diagnostic performance and evaluation efficacy of 68Ga-NOTA-PRGD2 in lung injury (LI) and pulmonary fibrosis (PF) patients. A single dose of nearly 111 MBq 68Ga-NOTA-PRGD2 (≤ 40 µg NOTA-PRGD2) will be intravenously injected into patients with LI/PF. Visual and semiquantitative method will be used to assess the PET/CT images.
