Detection of the Incidence of Pre-existing Cardio-pulmonary Diseases by Using of Echocardiography...
Intensive Care Unit SyndromeIntroduction: The uncomplicated and focused transthoracic cardiac ultrasound examination, which is gentle for the patient, gives the doctor in a short time a lot of information about possible, as unrecognized pathologies of the organs of the chest. Before a patient undergoes a planned procedure or intervention with a subsequent intensive stay, examinations are necessary from which the anesthetist/intensive physician has important information the state of health of the patient. The findings and the information will be used to plan the individual anesthesia procedures and intensive medical management, which is suitable for the patient. The aim of this work is to investigate whether the use of a modified examination protocol in patients who need to be admitted to an intensive care unit has an influence on the actions of the intensive care physician. Does the information that is collected from the findings have a complementary influence in the planning of intensive care management? The Study objectives Primary objectives: What is the frequency with which pathological changes are detected? Secondary objectives: Do the additional findings have an influence on the intensive care procedure?
Effects of Secondhand Smoke on Flight Attendant Health
Cardiopulmonary DiseaseThis is a study on a population of flight attendants who were exposed to occupational secondhand tobacco smoke (SHS). This research will examine associations between flight attendant SHS exposure and development of respiratory illnesses, reproductive problems, and cardiovascular diseases.
Neurally Adjusted Ventilatory Assist in Adults at Risk of Delayed Weaning From Mechanical Ventilation...
Adults With Cardiopulmonary Disease at Risk of Prolonged Weaning From Mechanical VentilationMany patients admitted to intensive care have heart or lung problems. Patients with these conditions often require longer durations of support from breathing machines. Survival and long-term recovery are improved if the investigators can remove the breathing support quickly. In this study, the investigators will focus on patients with severe lung or heart disease to examine whether a particular type of breathing machine (NAVA ventilator) will allow us to remove breathing support more quickly and with less need for sedative medications, when compared to current practice.
IUGR, Respiratory Muscle Function, and Exercise Capacity in Childhood
Intrauterine Growth RestrictionCardiopulmonary DiseaseThe study hypothesis is that intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) may have long-term effects on respiratory muscle (RM) function, thus leading to reduced exercise capacity later in life. The objective is to investigate the above hypothesis by comparing RM function and cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) parameters between school-aged children exposed to IUGR and healthy controls.
World Trade Center (WTC) CHEST
Pulmonary DiseaseCardiac Disease3 moreThis project will evaluate the effects of World Trade Center (WTC) exposure in WTC responders 10-13 years following the events of 9/11. Prior studies have described persistent pulmonary function abnormalities in a significant portion of responders. The investigators study seeks to examine the relationship between pulmonary function abnormalities and other markers of chronic cardiopulmonary disease and further elucidate the pathophysiologic effects of exposure to inhaled particulate matter (PM) on 9/11. This study will provide critical information regarding risk of exposure to PM, risk factors for disease and potential for improvements in diagnosis and treatment.
Clinical Validation Study for Noninvasive Cardiopulmonary Management Device
Cardiopulmonary DiseaseThe ADI At-Home CPM (Cardiopulmonary Management) System is a non-invasive device that measures and trends a variety of biological parameters. This study will be conducted as a prospective non-randomized study with two study arms/cohorts - one of healthy adult patients, one of pathologic patients who fit into the intended use population of the CPM System.
Detection of Right Ventricular Dysfunction by 2D Strain During Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrom...
Acute Respiratory Distress SyndromeRight Ventricular Dysfunction2 moreAcute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and mechanical ventilation can lead to right ventricular dysfunction and ultimately right ventricular failure by increasing pulmonary vascular resistances and pressure load. This can be prevented by modifying ventilator settings, using vasopressors or inotropes or even by prone positionning. But to do so, right ventricular dysfonction has to be detected. Echocardiography has emerged as a first line tool to diagnose right heart failure. Recently, strain analysis showed promising results to detect early right ventricle abnormalities in other settings such as pulmonary hypertension or scleroderma. We therefore decided to determine whether 2D strain could help detect early right ventricular dysfunction in ARDS.
NT-proBNP as a Tool for the Detection of Acute Pulmonary Artery Embolism (APE)
Pulmonary EmbolismPulmonary Embolism Without Mention of Acute Cor PulmonaleIn patients with suspected APE (Acute Pulmonary Embolism) referred to the intensive care unit (ICU)after major surgery, serum NT-proBNP (N-terminal proBNP), Troponin-I and D-dimers were measured according to the standard hospital protocol. To definitively confirm or exclude APE, all patients underwent an angiographic CT-scan of the thorax.
Non-invasive Assessment of Pulmonary Vascular Resistance in Elderly Patients With Chronic Obstructive...
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary DiseasePulmonary Hypertension1 moreMany studies have evaluated the viability of measuring the pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) by non-invasive methods in patients with pulmonary hypertension, pulmonary thromboembolism, ischemic cardiopathy and valvular disease. The investigators have not found other studies which evaluate the PVR in elderly patients with COPD. The hypothesis is that in patients with COPD, the severity of obstruction, expressed by GOLD class, is associated with an increase of PVR.
The Use of a Ultra-sound of the Lung to Diagnose Lung Diseases
Pulmonary PathologiesCardio-pulmonary DiseasesThe study is a prospective open evaluating study of Ultrasound/Doppler application to the chest cavity intended to detect and characterize pathologies of the pulmonary and cardio-vascular system. The system is a noninvasive non-imaging device designated to monitor flow and movement velocity and display the data continuously.
