Lung Nodule Imaging Biobank for Radiomics and AI Research

Lung CancerPulmonary Nodule4 more

This study will collect retrospective CT scan images and clinical data from participants with incidental lung nodules seen in hospitals across London. The investigators will research whether machine learning can be used to predict which participants will develop lung cancer, to improve early diagnosis.

Identifying Genomic Mutations of Multiple Primary Lung Cancers by Circulating Tumor DNA

CarcinomaNon-small-cell Lung Cancer1 more

Targeted next generation sequencing (NGS) provides a promising method for diagnostic purposes by enabling the simultaneous detection of multiple gene mutations. This study is to evaluate the feasibility and application value by using NGS into identifying genomic mutations in multiple or multifocal primary lung cancers in cell-tumor DNA (ctDNA) from surgical patients

Non Invasive Detection of Lung and Breast Cancer by Odor Signature

Lung CancerBreast Cancer

The investigators have developed an early detection solution for lung and breast cancer. A system which can distinguish between different medical odors based on biosensors. Our product is user-friendly noninvasive, nonradioactive and nontoxic to the patients. The technology enables a high level of sensitivity and provides users with a quick lab response and a simple yes or no answer. The aim of this study is to contribute and detect the patient at the earliest possible stage, in a noninvasive, nonradioactive and nontoxic way. Exhaled breath and urine samples are a promising approach towards future possible lung and breast cancer screening method.

Expression and Sequence of Calcium Channels in Non-small Cell Lung Carcinoma (NSCLC)

NSCLC

Calcium is an extremely important ion used in our body for many processes. One of its tasks is to control gene expression. Cells intake calcium from their surroundings though special calcium channels located on the surface membranes of the cells. The great many studies on such calcium channels were performed on excitable cells such as muscle, heart or neuronal cells, where the calcium ions are controlled by voltage. Surprisingly, not much is known about the identity of calcium subunits in non-excitable cells like epithelial cells (which compose most of the connective tissue in the body), liver cells, lung cells, immune system cells, etc. Recently, the investigators have shown that calcium channels from muscles are, in fact, expressed in T cells of the immune system, where they are used for proliferation. The investigators postulated that probably other cell types, especially cancerous cell types, might be using these subunits similarly. The aim of this study is to determine the identity and sequence of calcium subunits expressed in non-small cell Lung Carcinoma (NSCLC), which accounts for 80% of the worldwide lung cancer deaths.

Genetic Epidemiological Study of Lung Cancer in Taiwan and Clinical Applications

Lung Cancer

Lung adenocarcinoma in Chinese females is hypothesized to be determined by both genetic and environmental factors. In this grant proposal, we propose to map the loci of susceptibility genes of female lung adenocarcinoma based on multiplex families recruited in Taiwan. We focus on a unique pathological type of a unique population in order to reduce heterogeneity of the genetic background. Compared with western women, female Chinese population has a high prevalence of lung adenocarcinoma. Our reasoning is that if we focus on a specific sub-type, which has a familial basis, we will increase the probability of identifying genes associated with female lung adenocarcinoma. The primary goal of this study is to identify the genetic and environmental determinants of female lung adenocarcinoma, and study the relationship between gene polymorphisms and clinical manifestation profiling of lung cancer.
