Comparison of the Stiffness of the Lumbar Back Muscles Between Low Back Pain and Healthy Controls...

Low Back Pain

Chronic low back pain remains a major public health issue. Low back pain is frequently associated with stiffness changes of the lumbar back muscles. The techniques which assess the stiffness of the back muscles are poorly reliable and do not allow the quantification of stiffness changes. Elastography (magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasound) can be used to objectively and non-invasively quantify in vivo tissue elasticity. The aim of the investigator's study is to compare the stiffness in the main lumbar back muscles (i.e. the erector spinae and the multifidus) by using magnetic resonance elastography and shear wave elastography.

This study investigates the association between the duration of smart phone use and back pain and proprioception deficits in patients with chronic mechanical low back pain (CLBP). It is hypothesized that increased duration of smart phone use will be associated with Increased back pain as measured by the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) Reduced proprioception acuity as indicated by increased angle of error of back repositioning as measured by isokinetic dynamometer.

Spinal Kinematics in Chronic Low Back Pain

Chronic Low Back Pain

Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is one of the most frequent causes for limitations in daily, leisure and work-related activities. Although alterations in spinal motor behavior were consistently reported in CLBP patients, it remains unclear how improvements in spinal motor behavior through rehabilitation treatment affect pain and disability. Psychological factors, such as pain-related fear, were suggested as a possible main cause of spinal motor behavior in CLBP and better understanding their relationships with kinematic and muscle activity alterations is required to enhance care, particularly physiotherapy. Therefore, this study will test CLBP patients before and after a 3 week rehabilitation program to test the hypotheses that: 1) improvements in spinal motor behavior (kinematics and trunk muscle activity) are associated with decreased pain and disability; 2) decrease in pain-related fear is associated with spinal motor behavior improvements.

Trunk Muscle Strength, Strength Endurance and Activity in Persons With Low Back Pain

The research questions are if persons with low back pain (LBP) have lower trunk muscle strength, lower trunk muscle strength endurance and lower trunk muscle activity than healthy controls and if functional limitations because of LBP are related to the level of muscle strength, strength endurance and activity. To investigate this investigators will carry out a clinical assessment including questionnaires and a biomechanical assessment comprising muscle strength tests, muscle strength endurance tests and electromyographic (EMG) analysis of selected trunk muscles.

The specific aim of this study is to conduct a prospective, multicenter cohort study over four months to compare the cost of standard of allopathic care (control group, N=90) versus standard of care plus osteopathic manipulative treatment (experimental group, N=90) in a cohort of 180 consecutive patients seeking treatment for chronic low back pain at three osteopathic clinics and three allopathic medical clinics (offering only standard care) located in three different regions of the United States.

Chronic Low-back Pain

Objective: This study will be conducted to investigate the relationship between the amplitude of posterior oblique sling muscles; ipsilateral gluteus maximus (GM) and contralateral latissmus Dorsi (LD), and the amount of anterior translation of humeral head (ATHH) of the contralateral glenohumeral joint (GHJ) in subjects with unilateral chronic low back pain (CLBP) during ipsilateral prone knee extension (PHE) test. Methods: The study will be conducted on thirty subjects (15 patients with CLBP and 15 healthy subjects). Ipsilateral GM and contralateral LD amplitude will be recorded by surface EMG during PHE of the limb at the painful side and correlated to ATHH of contralateral GHJ as measured by ultrasonography. Hypothesis: There won't be a significant relationship between the amplitude of posterior oblique sling muscles (GM and contralateral LD) during PHE for the ipsilateral leg and the amount of ATHH of the contralateral GHJ in patients with unilateral CLBP.

Treatment of Low Back Pain in Pregnant Women : Uses of Drugs and Other Therapies

Low back pain is a frequent clinical condition in pregnancy. Drugs treatments are limited. Other therapies are often used, associated or not with drugs (acupuncture, manipulative medicine, physical therapies, homeopathy). Clinical studies suggest a reduction of low back pain with these therapies. The primary objective of this study is to determinate how many pregnant women use these alternative therapeutics. In a second time, we want evaluate efficiency of these therapeutics, especially in pain modification and on quality of life. Our study is a declarative study on pregnant women in Lorraine.
