Crohn's DiseaseInflammatory Bowel Disease

This randomized placebo-controlled double-blind, multi-centre trial will determine the efficacy of the probiotic VSL#3 in the prevention of Crohn's disease development following surgical resection and re-anastomosis. A total of 120 patients will be randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to receive VSL#3 or placebo for 90 days. Patients who respond to study treatment, as defined by the absence of a severe endoscopic recurrence at day 90, will be offered open-label VSL#3 for an additional 9 months.

Recurrent Ovarian Carcinoma

The proposed study is a prospective cohort study incorporating patients with first recurrence ovarian or primary peritoneal cancer who will receive intraperitoneal chemotherapy in conjunction with whole abdomen radiation. The primary end point of this investigator initiated research study is to determine the toxicity associated with whole abdomen radiation in combination with intraperitoneal chemotherapy. Primary Objective: Determine the maximum tolerated dose (MTD) of whole abdomen radiation in conjunction with intraperitoneal cisplatin chemotherapy in the treatment of women with small volume (< 1 cm) recurrent ovarian cancer confined to the abdominal peritoneal cavity. Secondary Objective: Quality of Life assessment.

Recurrent Malignant Glioma

IL13-PE38QQR is an oncology drug product consisting of IL13 (interleukin-13) and PE38QQR (a bacteria toxin). IL3-PE38QQR is a protein that exhibits cell killing activity against a variety of IL13-receptor positive tumor cell lines indicating that it may show a therapeutic benefit. In reciprocal competition experiments, the interaction between IL13-PE38QQR and the IL13 receptors was shown to be highly specific for human glioma cells.

Fast Assessment of Stroke and Transient Ischemic Attack to Prevent Early Recurrence (FASTER)

Transient Ischemic AttackStroke

Current management of patients with TIA (transient ischemic attack) or minor stroke includes the prompt investigation and treatment in the days and weeks after the event. However, new evidence shows patients are at the highest risk of stroke in the first few days after the TIA, with 50% of strokes which happen in the three months following TIA occurring within 48-72 hours. To date, there is no evidence to guide physicians on how to safely reduce this risk. The FASTER trial is focusing on the initial period of high risk, starting patients on stroke prevention treatments in the hours following a TIA or minor stroke. The drugs to be tested have been shown to be effective in the similar setting of cardiology, reducing recurrent cardiac events in patients with unstable angina when commenced with the same speed after an event. All patients will be on aspirin. The trial will see if adding another drug, clopidogrel, has an additional benefit in reducing the number of strokes after TIA or minor stroke within three months of TIA or minor stroke. It will also look if the very early introduction of simvastatin, a cholesterol lowering therapy, reduces stroke after TIA or minor stroke, both by itself and in addition to clopidogrel. The final aim of the trial is to ensure that these treatments are safe to be used in this population of patients.

The aim of this study is to test whether the realization of 3 courses of intra-arterial chemotherapy of idarubicin-lipiodol without embolization, administered non-selectively in the hepatic artery, following the percutaneous tumour ablation of a hepatocellular carcinoma, could constitute an effective adjuvant treatment to reduce the rates of local and intrahepatic distant recurrence and thus improve the survival without hepatic progression.
