The Effects of Passive Heat Therapy in Patients With Chronic Kidney Disease

Renal InsufficiencyChronic

The objective of this proposal is to investigate the acute effects of whole-body passive heat therapy using far-infrared technology on vascular function, exercise capacity, and renal function in CKD patients. The central hypothesis is that an acute bout of whole-body passive heat therapy will be well-tolerated and lead to acute improvements in large blood vessel (macrovascular) function, small blood vessel (microvascular) function, and exercise capacity without significantly altering markers of acute kidney injury.

High-protein Oral Supplement Improves Normalized Protein Catabolic Rate and Inflammation Markers...

Renal FailureChronic Kidney Disease Requiring Chronic Dialysis

The investigators propose to determine the impact of high-protein beverages on protein status and inflammation markers among CKD patients undergoing hemodialysis. A 12-week double-blind randomized cross-over trial will be used in which participants (n=22) will consume a 4-ounce high protein supplement with either whey (20 g total protein) or soy (20 g total protein). Outcomes of interest include serum urea nitrogen and inflammation markers (CRP and IL-6). The findings will contribute to the knowledge gap regarding the effect of different protein types in CKD populations which can be translated to the development of affordable supplements to prevent malnutrition in adults with non-communicable diseases.

L-arginine to Reduce Sympathetic Nerve Activity in CKD Patients

Chronic Kidney Disease

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular disease and death. An overactive sympathetic nervous system in CKD patients is one of the major mechanisms increasing the cardiovascular risks in this patient population. A potential signal driving sympathetic nerve activity (SNA) involves accumulation of the endogenous nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibitor asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA). ADMA is elevated in CKD and is a strong, independent predictor of future cardiovascular events in these patients. . The goal of this study is to determine whether overcoming the accumulation of endogenous ADMA with acute L-arginine infusion reduces SNA in CKD patients.

Propolis for Patients With Chronic Kidney Disease.

Chronic Kidney DiseasesInflammation

To evaluate the effects of propolis extract on inflammation in participants with chronic kidney disease. Specific objectives To assess before and after the intervention period: The expression of transcription factors (nuclear factor-kB), antioxidant enzymes (heme-oxygenase-1), inflammasome receptor, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ, as well as the levels of inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, Tumor nuclear factor-α, C-reactive protein, interleukin 1) and E-selectin adhesion molecules; The levels of protein expression of inflammatory markers and antioxidant enzymes; The profile of the intestinal microbiota of stool samples from the research participants; Plasma levels of substances reactive to thiobarbituric acid and oxidized low density lipoprotein as a marker of oxidative stress; Routine and anthropometric laboratory variables, indicative of the metabolic profile of the research participants; Assess blood pressure, 6-minute walk test, recovery heart rate and chair lift test to assess the functional capacity of the research participants; Assess atherogenic risk; Food intake and nutritional status; Compare data between the intervention and control groups.

CKD Specific Telemonitoring Platform to Minimize Adverse Outcomes in High Risk CKD Patients

Chronic Kidney Disease Stage 5End Stage Renal Disease

The main purpose of this trial is to determine whether the addition of the VIEWER virtual care platform to usual care will lead to a reduction in composite emergency department (ED) visits and/or hospitalizations/or increase the perceived safety of virtual care among patients and providers.

Effect of Inulin on Gut Microbiota and Gut Barrier in Chronic Kidney Disease

Chronic Kidney Disease 5D

An adequate fiber intake is crucial for a well-balanced diet and reduces the risk of chronic diseases. However, nutritional recommendations for chronic kidney disease patients lead to an insufficient fiber intake with possible maladaptive effects on the gut microbiome. Therefore, we want to study the effects of a 35-day inulin supplementation on the gut microbiome, gut barrier function, bacterial metabolites and immune cell states in chronic kidney disease patients.

Almond Milk With Vitamin D: Impact on Vitamin D Status

Renal InsufficiencyChronic2 more

The overall goal is to enhance vitamin D status in a safe and effective manner. A 3-week randomized comparator-controlled trial among a cohort of adults with CKD (stages 3-5) (n=24) will test the main objective: Evaluate the bioefficacy of D3 in micro- and nanoparticles (4000IUs) in almond milk with the sub-objective of: Explore the effect of D3 in micro- and nanoparticles (4000IUs) in almond milk on inflammation markers CRP, TNF-α and IL-6.

Pre- or Per-dialytic Physical Exercise : a Cardioprotective Role?

Chronic Kidney Diseases

This study aims at evaluating, in chronic kidney disease patients on dialysis, the effect of acute per- or pre-dialytic physical exercise on regional myocardial function and myocardial stunning, blood viscosity, arterial stiffness, variability of sinus rhythm, dialysis efficacy, inflammation, mineral and bone disorders, myokines and cardiac remodeling markers.
